“Beautiful hotel -- rooms can be variable in size”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

I stayed at this hotel twice and would stay again -- beautiful, comfortable, great friendly staff, nice breakfast, perfect location.Only thing to check carefully is the size of the room you are booking. I booked a room with two queen beds and it was huge. Next stay I booked a room with a queen and single and it was tiny. I would stay again in a heartbeat, but I would just look carefully at the room size.

I also stayed in the General Palmer, which has a similar feel and would pick the Strater over it -- the Strater is more lively and has a better breakfast.

I stayed here for one night on a business trip with a coworker and we both kicked ourselves for not basing the whole trip out of Durango. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are very clean and easy to get to and from the lobby. I love all the little hidey holes and such around the hotel - I found this out from the kid who was working in the candy store across the street and then went and found them all. The comment book in my room was great to read through and add my piece to as well.
All in all, a great hotel and I'd stay here again.

A trip to Durango isn't complet without a visit to the historic landmark Strater Hotel! The service here is first rate and the rooms are beautifully appointed with antiques and handscreened wallpaper -- each is unique. If a stay at the Strater is beyond your budget, go on in anyway to visit the lobby to get a feel for the Victorian elegance. Or have a meal or cocktails in one of their three excellent restaurants. The Diamond Belle Saloon offers casual wild west rowdiness complete with pretty saloon girls and delicious food. The Office is an intimate bar off the lobby -- great place for drinks and appetizers or a full meal. The Mahogany Grille is an elegant venue for fine dining and special occasion dinners. Located in downtown Durango, the Strater Hotel is close to many other restaurants, shops, and galleries.

We arrived and were welcomed by the staff! This is a beautiful historic hotel right in the center of historic Durango! We had a deluxe room with 2queen beds that was so spacious! Would recommend this to anyone including a family!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a deluxe... Much larger!

I debated staying here over the DoubleTree on the river and am so glad I opted for The Strater. This is the ONLY place to stay in Durango!! It is an older hotel but this historic atmosphere, and the location right in the middle of the action, can't be beat. Our room, a double plus a twin, was fine, not too small at all, including the bathroom, with very nice furniture and decor. Our room was on the first floor toward the back, was not sure at first if I should ask for a change, but it worked out fine. Were on 7th street, not toward the dumpsters. Thought there might be some street noise as we were right on street level but there wasn't. Main Street was VERY noisy. I was rather surprised at how rambunctios everyone was. But in our room we couldn't hear a thing.

Ate the the hotel restaurant, The Mahogany, which was very good. Overall, the experience of staying at this historic hotel was definitely the way to go when visiting Durango. The DoubleTree is in the same general area and near the train station but what you cannot see until you actually go there, it is also right on the highway! And The Strater and the entire downtown historic district is nicely separated, so it seems like it's own world. Don't expect luxury or first class treatment (no offer to help with luggage, for example), but go for this historic experience.

We were in Durango from June 30-July 4th, 2013. My husband and I enjoyed the charm, and historic quality - the ambience was really nice. Our room was a Std King, and was quite roomy and comfortable. The room was clean, and always stocked as needed with clean sheets, towels, etc. It is quite expensive if you use the bottled water, chocolates, etc. that can be purchased through the room. We NEVER bought any of that, we always had a case of water handy in our own cooler. The staff was courteous and accommodating. It is centrally located for the downtown shops, etc. We ate in the grill / bar area, which is pricey, but food was good. We both had special salads, something a little different than what we're used to. It was nice to experience the old west charm for our first trip to the Durango area, but we would opt for a more economical choice next time. All in all, we were pleased with our stay.

We could not wait for our vacation and our visit to this historic hotel in Durango. In terms of the physical space, it would be hard to beat the location, the architecture or the ambiance. The rooms in this historic hotel were just lovely-- closely resembling Sleeping Beauty's castle-- including the inch of dust everywhere.

GOOD STUFF: As other reviewers noted, the Saloon was a fun step-back in time, complete with piano-player and dance hall girls (Hooters could learn from this.) Definitely check out happy hour or a dinner special. The front desk personnel were very helpful, provided great info. and even did some cleaning (more about that below.) The continental breakfast was included in our stay and was filling- yogurt, fresh donuts and breads, jelly and peanut butter, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, good coffee and OJ. etc.

BAD STUFF: The cleaning crew have not been trained. At all. By anyone, including Chris, the Head of Housekeeping. When we arrived, there was enough dust in most places in the room that I could write "DUST ME" in it. Of course, I did so, but not until we had contacted both the front desk and Chris (Head of Housekeeping) and showed Chris exactly where the dust, fecal material in the bathrooms, abandoned garbage on the floor, etc. were located. She assured us that the "trainee" who had cleaned the room, would be more closely supervised. We never heard another word from Chris, and nothing changed in 5 nights. The fabulous front desk personnel scrubbed the brown gunk off the toilet, and replaced the in-room coffee. I emptied the coffee maker, carried my own clean coffee cups up from downstairs.

We eventually opened the windows and put up with the train whistle, street noise, fire particles, and dust from the cars and trains to get cleaner air in the room. Notably, we stayed at the Strater days when "air quality alerts" had been issued due to uncontrolled fires and copious amounts of particulates -- dirt-- in the air. Once opened, the outside air was still cleaner and the room was more comfortable.

I suspect if you visit this hotel, you will find a beautiful, overpriced property. I urge you to visit the Saloon, take a hotel tour, even have dinner. If you choose to stay the night, please enjoy the used dental floss on the nightstand, coffee rinds in the coffee maker, and the extra pillows under the bed. I am certain that these will be maintained for you, as they were for us, in the Sleeping Beauty-like preserve of your historic hotel room.

Dear Reviewer
Thank you for taking the time to review our property. I would like to address several issues you raised with cleanliness. I have spoken the Executive Housekeeper and addressed your issue with the trainee. I would like to note that we have an extremely extensive deep cleaning program, with the train passing six times a day, at that time many fires in the area- it was just in the air and we were working non stop all over this property trying to get the dust continually cleaned up. I am sorry we fell short in your eyes and that you did not feel you received the attention from housekeeping you felt it needed. Again, I have addressed this with the staff so that we can continue to improve our service all around.

Regards
