“Great rooms!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

I knew we wanted to stay in downtown Durango, and relied upon Trip Advisor ~ voila! We spent a delightful 3 nights at the Strater!

Our room was gigantic, and had a front-of-the-hotel view of Main Street. We booked a queen-queen, and it literally was like two rooms together! Perfect for our family of four!

Breakfast was a nice touch in the morning. Adequate. One step up from the "make your own waffles" chains, with eggs, toast-it-yourself breads, cereals, pastries, etc. Nothing really to write home about, but convenient.

We made it a point to reserve the hot tub each evening. It is reserved in half hour increments, and you have the hot tub room to yourself, with a bathroom/shower as well. It was a nice way to relax in the evening.

Picky things . . .there are journals associated with the rooms, with entries from former guests. Ours was full upon arrival. As we were looking to make our own "mark", we inquired at the front desk for a replacement, but they said they were out! Just a walk down the street to a drugstore to allow us to continue the tradition. . .! ! !

Also, Main Street facing rooms may be a bit noisy in the evenings . . .now, I don't mind people enjoying their evenings, but I have a HUGE problem with a carpet-cleaning company doing their thing at 6 a.m. Monday morning FOR ONE HOUR at a business adjacent to the hotel. So much for a relaxing wake-up!!!!!

All in all, sweet hotel ~ would stay again ~ but thought the staff would be a little more proactive ~ particularly in such a niche hotel!!!

This hotel is inviting and grand, and it has kept its historical character while adding a reasonable range of modern amenities. Excellent maintenance. The location cannot be beat. You can walk to a wide range of galleries, restaurants and shops within a couple of blocks. The staff is really superior. As someone who has lived in Colorado for many years, I'll admit that our casual service in restaurants and hotels across the state ranges from the cute to the exasperating. This place has an abundant and smart staff who can deal with any kind of visitor. I was given a really great restaurant recommendation on a 9:30 pm arrival (the hotel restaurant stops dinner service at 9:00, but there is a fun bar). The next morning I was, in spite of my express willingness to wait until the front desk was less busy, instantly whisked away to be shown other rooms of the hotel when I expressed an interest in returning with my family. The public areas of the hotel are especially attractive, and the breakfast is excellent. A waiter who noticed I was enjoying their posole brought me the recipe. Something about this place makes you feel like you're truly "away" and enjoying something special.

I wasn't happy with the pillows, but didn't realize they were a problem till 1:30 am. I didn't feel like walking a couple of blocks to the parking lot to fetch a better pillow from my car. This was more my problem than the hotel's, but I recommend planning around the non-adjacent parking before you settle in for the night.

Good location in the middle of town, staff courteous, very good breakfast, classy décor of good-old western movies. Our room on the 4th floor was cold despite the warm temp outside probably because of the old and high ceiling. Parking is across the street. We didn't have problem crossing the busy street. But some customs may need extra butler help for check-in process.

Room Tip: Good to re-live childhood memories of cow-boy movies

.... this would be their love child. My opinions about this hotel are mixed. First, it is a charming building with a perfect location downtown. The lobby, which is historic and appealing, has been maintained just the same as it was when I visited 40 years ago and multiple times between, The staff was top-notch in every respect.

The real problem I had was with the rooms themselves. Even in a B&B, I don't know that I have seen so many patterns on ceilings, walls, chairs, carpet, drapes, etc. The Bradbury & Bradbury ceilings were gorgeous but were drowned out by the cabbage rose wallpaper dominating the rest of the room. Add to that more bright roses on the upholstery and various "set-arounds" intended to bring charm and the room ended up just being plain crowded. I'm still not sure we brought home all of our stuff since it was nearly impossible to tell where anything was to begin with. Clutter is not the friend of a hotel guest. One of my favorite hotels is the Brown Palace in Denver with a similar pedigree. It was done more simply and tastefully. I did not find the Strater a restful place.

So, the final recommendation is "do go" if you love the crowded antique, busy environment that ruled the Victorian age. If you want something more Boomer Friendly, you might consider another option in town.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an outside view. They also have rooms with a compelling view of the air shaft an...

Love these sorts of hotels... So rich in lore and history.... Always down town so just park yourself in this great little town and enjoy everything from great restaurants to quaint little boutiques.... Or do as I did...... just enjoy the hotel, the great staff, the well appointed rooms, and there in house restaurant and saloon..... Look no further when in Durango.... Why would anyone stay at a chain.... Are points really worth it.... Loved this place

Room Tip: Go for a king

Very comfortable hotel with lots of history and charm.
Bedrooms very comfortable, whilst not being terribly spacious. The bars are welcoming and the menus are varied to suite all. Watch out for the bar maids in their traditional clothing. As for breakfast the continental menu is the most generous I have experienced maintaining excellent quality. Do try the breakfast soup. A local tradition that goes down well and the recipe is also offered to those interested.
Excellent location for local attractions, particularly the Durango to Silver-ton Railroad.

Room Tip: Parking to the rear of hotel. But on arrival get ticket which allows you to park across the road whi...

OK, lets be honest. You don't stay at the Strater for huge rooms with a modern bath and a mini bar. Anyone who marks it down for being what it is, should not be staying here. You stay at the Strater because you love histric boutique hotels, because you love the look and ambiance of antique furniture that is yes, a little creaky and a little less comfortable. The Strater is one of Americas premier historic hotels and it's an honor to get to stay in it. The staff is very friendly with plenty of hellos and makes you feel welcome. People are people and anyone can have an off day, but on the whole service is great. The rooms with a single queen bed are on the small side, and the answer is to book a room with a queen and a single because these are larger rooms. An important part of a stay here is drinks and music in the Colorado Belle. Not only visitors but large numbers of locals frequent the place. Strike up a conversation with some local folks while you listen to Donny Johson and the Blue Moon Ramblers on a Sunday night.
We will keep coming back, because modern hotels are well....boring, the Strater is western history at its' best.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 7th street side of the buidling. You can see the mounatins and the train go by...
