“Location, Value, and Local Feel for a Pleasure Traveller”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

This is the second time I have stayed at the Strater and will happily stay there again. It is a nice historical hotel with local feel and history. The hotel is right on the main historical area strip where there is lots of shopping and great restaurants. The river walk is only 4 blocks away. And it is a 3 minute drive to Ft. Lewis. They have nice restaurants and a bar right there (with local beers). The price was very good and included a nice continental breakfast (better than most). Incredibly quiet rooms, especailly for an historical hotel. Check in is at 4:00 and I called ahead on a Saturday and they accomodated a noon check-in which was extremely appreciated
Business travellers: Not an ideal place for business as the wifi is spotty at best and the desk not very large.

Room Tip: Suggestion: both times I came I was travelling alone. The first time I got a room with a double bed...

We just spent a long weekend in Durango and strayed at the Strater. It was an excellent choice, and probably the only place to stay in Durango. The hotel has great atmosphere, and our room was very nice. We had VERY low water pressure in the shower, but that is not totally surprising since we were on the top floor of such an old building. The location was perfect, and the breakfast (included) was far better than the usual fare. I highly recommend the Strater,

I loved the Strater Hotel. I have stayed there at least a half dozen times, often when we go out to Durango to visit our son who settled there . We had all the wedding guests stay there when he got married and also when we bring others out to visit him use this hotel. The antiques throughout the hotel are unique and sure set the stage for this total immersion in Durango's paste. The piano bar is so much fun and the food is good too.
We had his rehearsal dinner for wedding at the Strater 7 years ago.
It is so conveniently located. Can walk anywhere in town from their door ! The staff has always been helpful. I always tell folks heading out to Durango they must experience the Strater's hospitality. I really look forward to my next visit.

We'd heard that the Strater Hotel was a beautiful, Victorian Hotel, filled with antique furniture! We were NOT disappointed in that regard! We traveled to Durango to ride on the Silverton Railroad and this was the perfect place to carry out a "turn of the 1900's" theme. The hotel room we were in was small but nicely furnished and the bed was quite comfortable! The price was a bit on the high side compared to other properties that we stayed in during this "Southwest Tour." We loved the proximity to the train and to the downtown area, including very good shops and restaurants. If you have "mobility" concerns, there are stairs to get into the hotel, but they do have a small elevator to get you and your luggage up to your room. A bellman is available, upon request. Coffee was not provided in the room, but our floor had coffee set-up in the public area. The breakfast was good, however, it was quite crowded with tour groups getting an early start.

We spent 10 days at the Strater Hotel while snow skiing at Purgatory ski resort. The room we were in was an old "brothel" suite with authentic furniture from the 1800's......it was a really cool place with good food, good service and incredible atmosphere......go to Belle Star's Saloon downstairs....it's great!

Don't drive up expecting a doorman to welcome you and take your bags.....you have to shlep them up the stairs yourself. Fortunately there is a tiny elevator to get you upstairs to your room. We stayed two nights, but couldn't get the same room for both nights. The first room was large and comfortable. Since we were taking the train trip early in the morning we had to leave our bags packed by the door and the staff moved them to our second room. The second room was considerably smaller and there was peeling paint in the bathroom. The place seemed clean and the beds were comfortable. We were accused of taking something from the "gift" basket in the first room (a keychain) but we protested and it was removed from our bill. The breakfast was ordinary, like you'd get at any discount hotel chain. There were many people staying there in big travel groups, so you had to deal with that at breakfast. It was a disappointing stay. It's great to be a historic hotel but you have to provide some level of service afterall.

If you are a history buff and love a little pampering this is the hotel to stay in Durango. The guest rooms and the public areas have all been decorated tastefully with Victorian decor, while still having all the modern amenities. The hotel offers a fine breakfast and you can spend an enjoyable evening it one of its dining areas. We had an enjoyable time listening to country music while dining in the Diamond Belle Saloon. It was a real blast from the past. The hotel is about two blocks from the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad and the train passes by the rear of the hotel several times a day. This hotel is perfect for the history buff who still likes to live well!

Room Tip: As all the rooms are decorated differently and room will be an experience to remember. With the trai...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Built in 1887, The historic Strater Hotel is a prominent downtown Durango, Colorado landmark located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Cleveland pharmacist, Henry Strater, believed Durango would thrive, and with its prosperity, it would need a grand hotel. The Strater Hotel opened after an expenditure of $70,000 and placement of 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills. As the hotel evolved, it became a popular winter retreat for Durango town folk who would close their own homes during the cold months and move into the hotel. Currently, the Strater Hotel houses the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Antiques, many of which decorate its 93 guestrooms including its Louis L’Amour Room—designated Literary Landmark. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, Strater Catering and Events, and The Office Spiritorium. ... more   less
