“BEST in Durango!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

We spent 10 days at the Strater Hotel while snow skiing at Purgatory ski resort. The room we were in was an old "brothel" suite with authentic furniture from the 1800's......it was a really cool place with good food, good service and incredible atmosphere......go to Belle Star's Saloon downstairs....it's great!

Don't drive up expecting a doorman to welcome you and take your bags.....you have to shlep them up the stairs yourself. Fortunately there is a tiny elevator to get you upstairs to your room. We stayed two nights, but couldn't get the same room for both nights. The first room was large and comfortable. Since we were taking the train trip early in the morning we had to leave our bags packed by the door and the staff moved them to our second room. The second room was considerably smaller and there was peeling paint in the bathroom. The place seemed clean and the beds were comfortable. We were accused of taking something from the "gift" basket in the first room (a keychain) but we protested and it was removed from our bill. The breakfast was ordinary, like you'd get at any discount hotel chain. There were many people staying there in big travel groups, so you had to deal with that at breakfast. It was a disappointing stay. It's great to be a historic hotel but you have to provide some level of service afterall.

If you are a history buff and love a little pampering this is the hotel to stay in Durango. The guest rooms and the public areas have all been decorated tastefully with Victorian decor, while still having all the modern amenities. The hotel offers a fine breakfast and you can spend an enjoyable evening it one of its dining areas. We had an enjoyable time listening to country music while dining in the Diamond Belle Saloon. It was a real blast from the past. The hotel is about two blocks from the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad and the train passes by the rear of the hotel several times a day. This hotel is perfect for the history buff who still likes to live well!

Room Tip: As all the rooms are decorated differently and room will be an experience to remember. With the trai...

How often do you have the chance to stay in living history? The hotel and the furnishings are beautiful. A very enjoyable breakfast. Thanks Roy for the posole and scones. Super bellmen and front desk personell. I have stayed
at the Strater in the past and enjoyed room 104 1/2. Not available now.

When you walk into the Hotel Strater, you know immediately that it looks just like it did in the 1800s. The hotel is authentic in detail; the rooms are comfortable (bathrooms NOT authentic!), and the staff is great. The hotel has two bars, good restaurant facilities and parking (even for small trailers) two blocks down. Enjoyed our two nights there immensely and would recommend it without reservation (no pun intended).

Room Tip: Ask for room that is not above the maintenance area, where the staff begins its day at 6 a.m.

This hotel has been lovingly restored and it is a jewel in a great little town. Our room on this visit was on the third floor and down a long corridor so if not quite the servants' quarters, still a bit out of 'the body of the kirk' as we say in Scotland. It was still nicely decorated and furnished and beautifully clean.Breakfast is excellent...don't forget to try the 'posole' a lovely spicy soup and the best breakfast item I have eaten anywhere, ever. At the prices charged in this hotel I find it rather offensive to be asked to pay for the small bottle of water in the room and personally I could do without the female bar staff having to wear show girl costumes...but despite the gimmicks this is still a great place to stay.

This was our second stay at the Strater, and we were not disappointed. This hotel is ideally located on Main Street, just steps from things to see and do in town. When you enter the lobby, you feel as if you've stepped back in time to the Old West. The young and energetic staff is pleasant and eager to please, and they are ready to provide helpful information and advice when asked. Breakfast was complimentary and good, and the Belle Diamond Saloon, which is part of the hotel, is a great place for lunch, or for relaxing over drinks. We stayed on a weekend, and there was a very entertaining piano player in the saloon both nights. Our room, a Classic King, was on the small side, but it was clean and beautfully furnished, and it had everything we needed. If you go to Durango, make reservations to ride the Durango/Silverton Narrow Guage Railway. The views are breathtaking as the train winds its way up the mountain, and Silverton is an interesting old mining town. If we return to Durango, we would definitely stay at the Strater again!
