The Strater was a comfortable and quiet place to stay. We loved hearing the train go by and the location was right in the center of town. The shower was VERY small, but the room was just what we needed for a good night's rest. We didn't spend much time in the room, but with so much to see in Durango, the only thing we needed was a comfortable room. If you can get a good price, stay at the Strater!

Dark wood and rich wallpaper abound. A marvelous relic from a long lost time. I had a deluxe room for $135 with a king bed, plenty of space and very small tv. A full and yummy breakfast is included. The room itself is nice, but it is the common areas that really shine. They have really done a nice job. I'm headed back to Durango in January and have already re-booked. Very nice.

Like many others, we stopped in Durango primarily to take the historic train to Silverton (note: Silverton Brewery cafe is not to be missed). Picked the Strater after reading reviews of many of the hotels in Tripadvisor, and feeling overall it was the best one in the historic district for us. There are other choices. The room was very comfortable and historically atmospheric, though, as noted, the bathroom is small (very small shower). It is historic, after all. We are able to find parking right across the street (need to put a pass in your windshield). Other lots are further away. We had a drink in the "saloon," which is atmospheric though touristy/kitchy. Had dinner elsewhere (most places nearby were fairly pricey). Breakfast buffet, included in the price, was pretty good. Hotel is a short walk to the train station (to go to Silverton). I imagine you would hear the whistle in the morning from your room if you were not taking the train.

I agree with some other reviewers that this hotel was too expensive for what you get for rooms. The room was tiny and had a standing shower only for over $175. I expected a lot more luxury for that kind of money and felt that while it was pretty decent and the downtown location is great, this is much more of a place for older people. The staff was nice but the room was way too small and short on amenities. I love Durango and go for weekend getaways any chance I get but I will go somewhere that gives more value next time.
