“The COOLEST place to stay in Durango”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2011

The history around the Strater should be more than enough to convince one to stay there. If not, here's a few extra details. It was a great stay, can't say we saw any ghosts, but for the price, it was actually cheaper than most other places in Durango. Rooms were super clean, it's right smack in the middle of downtown, close to everything. You can walk to the historic movie theater from there, jump on the Durango & Silverton Narrowgauge RR.

Perfect location. Perfect Hotel. Perfect Stay. 'Nuff said!

Room Tip: Try to get a room all the way down at the end of a hallway. It's spookier like that ;)

Stayed here for a couple of days in September while in Durango for business. The location is great and the hotel itself is very comfortable and clean. Staff was very friendly and breakfast was good.

Go here - so good. The staff are really really nice. There's a great bar for cocktails, an excellent restaurant and you can wind up the evening in the saloon bar. The steam railway is just a short walk away but if time is short you can see the train off in morning (great photo opportunity) and then drive up to Silverton to see it again! Get directions to the Animas Trail overlook oustide of town, great drive, high up into the hills with a good walk at the end. You can join the Colorado trail on the way.

Durango is a great little town . All in all this destination is top notch.

Overall, I have nothing but rave reviews for the Strater. It is a really gorgeous and fun hotel. You will be surrounded by wonderful antiques in lovely and comfortable rooms with air conditioning and elevators. The decor of the rooms is stunning and everything you hope for in a special hotel experience. The saloon is the best part of the stay, a lively fun place with pretty and friendly saloon girl servers and fabulous food, drink, and piano playing. The lobby is a virtual wild west Victorian museum with alot of real relics and treasures to ogle. I want to say
Everything was perfect, but there was one small problem- the person checking us in at the front desk was very brusque and unhelpful. She was even abusive to the couple checking
In next to us. There were about six people at the front desk, including a bellman, yet no one
Told us how to get our luggage in, or offered any help either checking in or out. We had to
ask where to park and no one told us about the elevator. I will say that the hotel was so nice and the fun we had was so good, that I would not let the poor attitude of the front desk dissuade me from staying there again. Do go to the Strater, it is worth it, just remember to ask for help with your luggage because they do have bell services-they just won't volunteer this or any other information to you. You can park at the back of the hotel but only if you have a compact car. There is parking at a side lot across the street also. I tell you this because the front desk will not bother to tell you any of this, they'll just stand around and talk while you struggle up steps with your luggage no matter how old or disabled you are. To be fair, the
other pluses of staying here far outweigh these negative things. On check-in, they also did not
mention the free breakfast that comes with your room, which is served in a room off the lobby.
I found this info in the room guide, so remember this when staying there, because the hotel is
Not big on communicating with the guests. The manager was concerned about our poor experience with the front desk and said that things will improve, so please do go stay here.
In spite of a shaky start, our stay was great and we will return. It is very rare to come across
anyone who is unfriendly in Colorado, the people in this state are just wonderful and welcoming
Everywhere, so your experience with the front desk will be much better, I am sure.
I do want to thank and commend one great guy at the front desk named Matt, who later
Helped me with my wifi and was very sweet. Thanks to the Strater for a fun time in Durango !

Room Tip: We had a king bed room with lovely purple and green flowered wallpaper which was a Wonderful room...

The Strater continues to shine. We have stayed here a few times now, and are never disappointed. The rooms are in excellent condition, comfortable beds, with all the modern conveniences in a historic, well kept, and well located hotel. It isn't cheap, but it worth it. If you want luxury at a fair price in Durango, stay here.

Room Tip: The lowest priced rooms can be quite small, so consider upgrading to a higher grade room.

Don't stay anywhere else, the Strater is the place to stay in Durango. We loved our Victorian decorated room, feeling like we were living in the era. A visit to the Saloon downstairs is a must with ragtime music being played and of course the "shoot-out" taking place inside and going to the street. Louis A'Mour wrote many of his novels in the room over the saloon near our room on the second floor. We were very close to the train to Silverton and lots of fun shopping along the main street. Just a good suggestion, take the train to Silverton and ride the bus back for good views and great narration along the way. Also, enjoy the Pezole soup in the Strater restaurant ... you will want to make it at home :) Ask for the recipe.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor near the stairway. Yes the Strater is older, but you must realize that...

This historic hotel embodies all that a booming western mining hotel was. This is an elegant, family-friendly hotel. We stayed in the governo's suite and it oozed Victorian charm. The restaurants in the hotel served some of the best food we got in town. We highly recommend the melodrama for an evening of laughs for an entire evening.
