“Great hotel - shame about the beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2011

This is a beautiful hotel in the heart of a very pretty little town. We had great service from the staff, although I think the breakfast has been over-rated by previous reviewers. It was OK but not quite as mouth-watering as I had expected. The Sheriff's Lady insists, though, that I say how good the coffee was - easily the best she had drunk in a week of this road trip. However, the hotel really lost marks on the sleep aspects. We Europeans are used to small rooms so that isn't the issue so much as the small double beds - I think Americans would call them fullsize and only ever use them for single occupancy. May be fine for the young and frisky but the Lady and I kept getting tangled up with each other in the night at a real cost to our sleep!

Booked the locals deal for a night. Fantastic service and rates.
Included a wonderful dinner and breakfast.
Had a lovely standard room on the 3rd flood. Quite spacious and quiet.
All was perfect. Great place just to enjoy.

We stayed at the Strater on our way back from Telluride - I had lusted for the Strater for many years and we finally had the opportunity to stay there. Located in the heart of Durango and an icon of this historic little city. Pristine, elegant, friendly and accommodating staff, and just an overall wonderful experience. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant for Christmas evening. We were so pleased with the beautiful Victorian style setting, the music serenade of the grand piano, and our wonderful table by the fireplace. The food was good and the service was excellent, even with a packed house. Our room was small but very nice, tasteful period décor, and the bathroom was beautifully updated with beautiful snowy view from the window. We recommend this hotel to all, but particularly as a "romance" destination. A nice perk too is that you are right near the train station and the steam train trips are not to be missed!

If you want something special and Christmasy, this is the place for you.

They dress up nicely for the holidays, with beautiful decorations accenting a naturally beautiful hotel.

If you're looking for new, modern amenities, skip it. But everything is still comfortable. It's almost like staying at your grandparents' house. Big antique furniture, lumpy beds, and 20-30 year old bathrooms. It all makes for a nice break from the usual and a fun trip back in time.

We were in town to ride the Polar Express with a 2.5 year old. Don't miss that one if you have kids! It's only two blocks away.

Lots of shopping and restaurants about 5 seconds out the door. I highly recommend the little French place at the other end of the block as you make a right out the front door for breakfast, and make a stop at the hotel's saloon for lunch.

Tip: unload in their loading space out front and then get directions to free parking. Don't fight for a street spot when it's busy.

Good hotel hot tub downstairs was nice, room decent, charming and old. Nice touch was the notebook in the room where people shared their stories. Most of them were even tasteful. Bar downstairs was nice; overall a good experience.

We were looking for an adventure and found it at the Strater. You feel like you can step back in time when you enter the lobby. Carved wood and classic details for a time gone by. The beds were very comfortable and rooms are clean and charming. We loved the touch of the diary that the hotel provided to leave your mark on this historic hotel. The Office is a great place to go and have a few drinks. We enjoyed the friendly staff and complimenry breakfast, especially the quiche and pisole.

Great hotel if you want an old fashioned antiquey kind of place, which we did. We were in the newer addition but it still had the old time look & feel. Breakfast buffet was much better than your average chain hotels. Location is right in the center of the historic area.
