“A great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2010

The service was good and the staff friendly and helpful. The rooms are great - split across 2 floors with one double bed upstairs and another downstairs, so great for groups or family. Clean, with comfortable beds. Good breakfast. This hotel is a little out of town, but the scenery is beautiful and hotel itself has much more character than some of the "chain" hotels in town, and it was actually only 5 minutes further to drive.

My DH and I stayed at the Iron Horse back in 2002 for several days so when we decided to return to Durango we thought that we would stay here again regardless of the reviews. Boy was that a mistake. This time we stayed in the "trackside'" rooms where are supposed to be upgraded-NOT! The only difference perhaps is that they do not allow dogs ? First off, although the rooms are two story (townhouse like) there is only a bedroom upstairs (no bath) so if you sleep up there you have to come down the stairs to use the bathroom. The bathroom downstairs was reasonably upgraded except that the padded toilet seat was cracked in several places--grosss! The shower itself was pretty good but the two bath towels were barely as large as hand towels and so rough they scratched the skin. There is a small kitchenette with a fridge and a mircrowave--but NO COFFEE machine!!! Plus, there were about 5 plates but no glasses and a tiny little class coffee cup that probably held 1/2 cup of water. No pans whatsoever. The hotel advertises a free continental breakfast and that does provide coffee...but if you are staying in the trackside rooms you have to walk about 5 minutes to get to the lobby because they apparently had some damage to the pool and pool side buildings and it is all blocked off. The breakfast consisted of some coffee, hot water, cheerios, muffins and bagels...nothing live. The rooms contain two beds, one downstairs fullsize and one upstairs, queen. There is a small table and a couple of chairs. And there is a fireplace although we did not use it. We stayed at the hotel over Memorial Weekend and the place was packed. Everyone parks about 2 feet from the front of their room and you can barely walk down the sidewalk in front of the doors. Very bleak and depressing. And although we were on the trackside you had to walk past all the cars, across the driveway, to a rough patch of grass with a couple of picnic tables. True, the view across the tracks is nice, but the parking lot feel and bright sunlight (no trees or shade) felt bleak and unfriendly. Also, every room had one main window that faced outside (parking lot) that had blackout windows...unfortunately if you opened the windows at all, everyone who walked by could look right into your room. If you left your door open--the same thing. So if you wanted privacy (who doesn't?) you had to leave your curtains closed and sit in the dark. Again, very depressing. The service at the front desk was apathetic, they didn't seem to want to be there either. The carpet was stained and gross. There was a small tube TV set that had HBO, but who goes to Durango to sit in the dark to watch TV? They also advertise free wifi---so imagine the surprise where told that you had to go and sit in the breakfast room to pick it up!!!! We thought the price was fairly reasonable compared to other hotels in Durango when I booked it, but after staying here feel like we way overpaid, and will NEVER stay here again. I appreciate a good value but I do not think that you get your moneys worth here and would STRONGLY recommend that others go elsewhere.

I had a trackside room. It was pretty clean and staff was nice. It looks like rooms are being redone. Was not very expensive and worked well. My thoughts are different from other reviews. I did not experience the problems others had. It's a big hotel so if it;s full maybe some rooms are not nice.Ask for trackside.

At the Iron Horse, you get what you pay for. We were passing through on our way to the Grand Canyon, Luckily we only stayed one night. They definately haven't put ANY money into this place for years. One night stays OK, longer than that, Well I wouldn't.

we were there for 5 days for our daughter's wedding and there were 8 arrests that we saw with numerous homeless people drifting through. The hotel room was filthy, I was afraid my 81 yr old mom would fall off the stairs(very rickety and unsafe). The 3 chairs in our room were broken and tops were ripped. There were no legs or springs in the couch. We found cockroaches and the rooms were dirty. A homeless man jumped into the pool(fully clothed) when our children were swimming and the hotel staff did nothing. I am in law enforcement and would not reccomend this hotel to anyone. The hotel also rents rooms(by the week-month) to locals and they are drinking and fighting all the time. A drunk was on the roof of one of the buildings one night and was going to jump-this was after the domestic with the same people from the night before.

Let me start out my saying that we've stayed in 6 star hotels, motels, Bed and Breakfast, and all the way down to broken down hotels/motels and we had read all the reviews of this place before going. We were tempted to cancel and find somewhere else but decided that we'd take the chance. The one thing that caught our eye was someone saying to stay in the rooms on the track side. We were pleased with everything. If you are looking for a 5 or 6 star hotel with every amenity, you WILL be disappointed. If you are looking for a place out away from the traffic and town and have the option of looking out at the countryside (request a room on the train track side) and hearing the coyotes or cows in the night or morning and seeing the train pass by the room, then this is the place. If you don't ask for a room on that side, you will be disappointed because you'll be looking at a building, parking lot or nothing. These are two story rooms (lost with bed upstairs). Upon arriving we realized we were outside of downtown and asked about where to eat that was close (they recommended the Serious Texas BBQ and it was perfect). It took us 3 minutes to get there by car. There's plenty close by and if you have a car, you can get to anything. If you want to shop and dine by walking, you need to stay in town or drive 5 or 10 minutes to get there. No big deal for us. We went there to see the town, ride the train to Silverton and back and take in some history. We had a fireplace in our room and went to the store (5 minutes away) and picked up two duraflame logs to burn, 1 for each night and ate out one night and got some groceries to add to our leftovers for the second night and ate at our table by the fire in the room. There's a microwave and fridge in the room. The rooms are dated for sure, but very clean. Nothing modern about this place. The swimming pool was cloudy but we weren't there to swim. Wasn't dirty, just cloudy. The breakfast in the morning was plenty for us, (muffins, pastry's, cereals, fruit, juices, coffee. It was great to wake the final morning and dress and go out and sit at the picnic tables and wait for the 3 trains to come by. Great pic opportunities and tearing the train in the Animas valley where we were was perfect. The staff was helpful about where to eat and shop and though the girls at the front desk didn't have great personalities, they greeted us and gave us what we needed. Like I said, if you are looking for a modern hotel, up to date, walking distance to everything, and more expensive, don't stay here. But if you want a place to just to take in the quieter side of Durango life and part of the train experience coming by your room (and no, it doesn't shake or rattle the rooms), a fridge, microwave, upstairs and downstairs, room for 4, decent beds and bathroom, this is the place.

I should have known from the surly front desk person who checked us in and all the nasty ones who followed, this must not be a good place to be... either to work or to stay. There was a strange leakage in the floor. There was a fight that started in the parking lot a 3am complete with the sounds of fists hitting flesh, then doors slamming and bodies hitting walls. While I was trying to use the lobby computer (which never did work), a woman came in and had lost money in 3 of the 3 pop machines. Another asked for towels for the pool, but they were out. The location is inconvenient--neither close to the resort nor close to town. To top it off, there was a mysterious charge on my credit card when I got home from my vacation which has yet to be credited. It's inexpensive but it's not worth it.
