“Great View but Outdated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

We loved the layout of the rooms - split level with a bed upstairs and downstairs. The view is gorgeous like most places on the northside of Durango.

We had some issues - upstairs is very hot (and it was not that hot out) - need a ceiling fan upstairs to circulate air. Also our fridge was broken.

Breakfast buffet was pretty bleak.

The staff was very hospitable.

We stayed here for two nights on our family road trip with 4 kids. We originally booked a family room, but the AC was not working when we arrived. We called the office and they sent Terry by to help. Terry was wonderful and since he couldn't fix the AC quickly, he instead found two adjoining rooms that had been recently updated. It was plenty of room for all 6 of us. The setting is beautiful and quiet. The kids loved the pool and playground. We ate our dinners outside on the picnic tables. It's an older establishment and some of the rooms need updating, but our kids said it was their favorite place on our whole trip. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious. We would have no problem taking the kids back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has been updated.

We love to stay at the Iron horse inn every summer when we pass through town. This hotel sure seems to catch a lot of grief, but as long as you look at their website I think you will accurately know what to expect. My children love to watch the train pass by, and my husband and I sure do enjoy the convenience of the onsite playground. We always ride the free trolley into town, and catch it back after some Durango adventures. Every year the staff is great to us, and when if we ever have a problem they are quick to address it! I don’t normally write reviews but after reading some of these I felt the need to stand up for one of my long time favorites!

Room Tip: Choose a trackside room!

This hotel is awful! Police searches every night for criminals, people getting beat up. They lied on their website about all there "wonderful" amenities, wi-fi only in office, not in rooms!! Clothing dryers never work! And don't pay in advance! We were paid up until the 7th and we left on the 30th and the refused to give us back our money for an entire week!!! They stole $225.00!! From my wife and myself!! Stay away from this dump!!!!! We were also sent a rude letter stating that long term guest are not allowed to use the pool!!! We moved here from California to the Iron Horse temporarily until we found an apt. The management and staff treats monthly people like trash or criminals. We came here because everything looked good on their website. And I had many conversations with them over the phone from California and was never told that they do not pro rate for monthly guests if you leave early nor we were not told we weren't allowed to use the pool etc etc. I have never been treated so poorly by any type of business in my life!!! So now in order for me to get my $225.00 back I have to file in small claims court!!! This folks is simple thievery!!!! They expect us to just walk away and let them keep our money for a week that we will no longer be staying there!!! Unreal!!!!!

We stayed here and knew it was an older establishment. The room we were in had painted paneling, which was coming off the wall. My toddler almost pulled off the corner molding with exposed nails. The light fixtures were covered with dust and dead bugs. We had to replace light bulbs along with batteries in the tv remote. A bathtub stopper had to be retrieved from the front desk. The carpet on the stairs was tattered. An alarm clock is not provided either. The upstairs room had old mini blinds that didn't keep out much light and was hot in the afternoon/early evening. Other suites had blackout curtains for the second floor. The website indicated queen sized beds and flat screen TV's but failed to say it was a limited number of suites with these. Our room had full sized beds only. Three chairs were provided in the room but one was missing half of the upholstery on it. The bathtub was damaged and the fan didn't work either. The trolley system is great, along with the play area and pool. Don't set high expectations if you plan to stay here--guess you get what you pay for during the summer season.

We went back to the Iron Horse Inn after 13 years and were stunned at how it has gone downhill, especially since we had read that they have upgraded their rooms. Clearly, not the room we were in! Carpet was worn and torn and dirty, the microwave didn't work, there was no remote for the TV, pop machine didn't work and the ice machine near our room was empty. The toilet needed frequent plunging - not our fault, just poor water flow/pressure. Maybe it was because we were on the side that allows pets but I have seen many other hotels that take pets and they were not this bad. The staff was polite and acted very quickly regarding the microwave and the remote but the building itself was in very poor shape. Don't think we would go back, should we decide to go to Durango again. The town is very nice, people ffriendly and the free shuttle is wonderful.

We came to Durango to ride the train and were looking for a discounted hotel. The Iron Horse Inn was a very good deal for the price. The staff was friendly and ready to help in any capacity possible. We enjoyed watching the train and the laundry facility on site. Our kids loved the game room which had air hockey and many arcade games. The front desk staff was very knowledgeable about the town and gave us wonderful suggestions about what to do and where to eat in durango. Would recommend toa friend.

Room Tip: Upgrade to trackside it is worth the extra 10$ newly renovovated and flat screen tvs.
