“Excellent Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

We had a large group stay here and the staff and manager went out of their way to help us in every way. The rooms ar large, clean and quiet. I especially liked seeing the train go by twice a day. This is not a luxury hotel - it's a family hotel. One that you can be comfortable, clean and safe in. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: We like the rooms facing the train tracks.

I had booked this hotel and then had read reviews that were not all that glowing. I arrived on a Monday and found the rooms have all been remodeled. These rooms have a ground level entry with a bed and TV and an upper level with another bed and TV. Its obvious the rooms have been remodeled and are very nice. The rooms facing the narrow gauge train tracks offer a nice view as well as a good vantage point to watch the trains come by. 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon returning. Noise at night is not a problem.
The old Office had been torn down and a new pool was being constructed in its place. The Hotel was clean, there was a Laundry as well as rec room. It appears that the staff is working on fixing the issues I had read about on previous posts.
The only Negative to this stay was the wifi access. Though stated on there webpage that they had wifi, you could only connect to it from office or in the rec room area.
I was assured that this was being addressed and if this is the case, this will be an excellent place to stay.

Anywhere in Durango would be better than this place. Facilities are Old and Dirty. I was afraid to take off my shoes. Police had to be called because staff wouldn't deal with guests who were being roudy and fighting at 1 am. Website was completely misleading. Better of staying at the Strater when in Durango.

We arrived there around 5 or so, turned on our air, then deciced to go out to eat downtown and walk around. Got back around 9 and our ac was blowing out warm air. We saw a "maid"(as they called them) and had her look. She did something, asked if it was better and we said no, we'd like a new room. Before we knew it, the front desk was calling us saying that housekeeping was just down there and said it worked fine. They were calling us liars? They moved us to a new room. Breakfast was so/so. We were gone the whole next day. They didn't replace our towels or anything. I called down to the front desk and asked for more. They said for me to walk down there and get them? Don't think so. It would have been nice if it weren't for the rude service.

I read some of the bad reviews about this place but I wanted to save money and just dismissed the bad reviews as people whining because ever thing was not perfect. Wow was I wrong. This place is a real DUMP! Bugs in the bathroom, torn carpets, dirty windows and a long list of other thing wrong. DON'T STAY HERE. Spend a few dollars more and enjoy your trip instead of putting yourself through this.

The rooms are okay, definitely worn down, and a little bit dirty. We asked for extra towels and were told that we couldn't have any. The fridge in the room buzzed like a beehive and then eventually puttered out. We asked for a replacement and were told that there was nothing they could do for us but put in a work order. Even though the rooms were non-smoking, our neighbors chain smoked sitting on the curb in front of our door, and then smoke in their rooms. The smoke creeped into our room through cracks in the mortar of the fireplace. We could also hear their loud coughing all night. We asked the management to do something about our rule-breaking neighbors (who also played loud music early in the morning) but were met with a shrug.
