Durango is not the small-town old-west place it once was - it is a fair-sized city now - not as charming as I had hoped - we stayed at the Holiday Inn for 2 nites and for the most part it was very quiet & comfortable-we got a room on the back-side facing the roaring river - very pretty. The Doubletree just down the road looked better, but it was full. We had read bad reviews on-line of the attached Applebee's - but we had helpful quick service & decent food for our take-out supper the first nite - it was pouring rain & we were tired & did not want to go back out into the storm. Odd set-up for the pool & hot-tub - it is in a separate building, so you have to go outside to enter or leave - on a cold & rainy evening that was not too inviting.
No sign of hobos or young men casing cars, as mentioned in previous reviews! The first nite it was pouring rain & nobody in their right mind was out. The second nite was nice - still the parking lot was fine. It does back up to a public-walkway along the river, so it has no way to be secured - but we found it to be safe & perfectly acceptable the nites we were there. If concerned for safety, I would park along the front facing the street .
