During our recent trip we stayed in both the Double Tree, and the Holiday Inn. We had river front rooms at both locations. Both hotels are walking distance to the train and downtown. Both have indoor swmming pools the kids enjoyed.
From a river point of view, the Double Tree is superior in that you have a deck and you can keep the sliding glass door open all night to listen to the river. On the other hand, the Holiday Inn room has no deck, and the windows cannot be opened to the outside; we could only enjoy listening to the river in the morning with the front door open. No deck, no windows that open and the Holiday's slightly smaller room, is why the Double Tree commands a $90 a night premium over the Holiday Inn for the same river view.
Food wise we grew tired of the never changing Double Tree buffet. Our kids demanded that we eat dinner at Applebee’s, located on the site (and free for kids), so we had two happy campers that night and breakfast.
My two kids preferred playing games on the Double Tree's two PCs over sharing the one in the Holiday Inn lobby. Everyone liked the Double Tree's *warm* and gooey chocolate chip cookies -- the best.
The Holiday Inn's "free coffee" is superior to that of the Double Tree. But true coffee addicts are advised to shun both, and head directly to the Durango Coffee Company on Main Street. The only decent coffee we found in town.
