What a great improvement after our disappointing stay at The Victorian Inn in Telluride! We arrived at his hotel 2 hours before check-in time and they let us go ahead and check in (we had nowhere else to go having just arrived in Durango). What a beautiful place! They have a beautiful indoor pool and jacuzzi that is decorated with brightly colored 3 story tall hanging banners that is in the center of the hotel. You can see it from every room.
The room was large and had a good size refrigerator that was large enough for our 4 people to stock their groceries in. It also had a microwave in it. It had a balcony with french doors that overlooked the Animas river and a lovely view of the mountain across Highway 550. The bed was extremely comfortable and soft.
The "free" breakfast had alot of choices to choose from. We liked that the breakfast starts at 6:30am since we are early risers. It is in a large room off of the pool area and can hold many people at 1 sitting, though it was never crowded when we were there. They also have a complimentary cocktail hour from 5 to 7pm where you can receive 2 free cocktails everynight. If you don't drink, you can get soft drinks instead.
Our only complaint was that the couch that folded out into a bed was extremely uncomfortable. The couple that had to sleep on it complained
every morning of how it hurt their backs. The mattress was thin and they could feel the metal bars thru the mattress. We asked at the front desk about getting an extra mattress to put on top of the other one, but was told there was nothing they could do. So if you stay here, get a room with 2 beds, don't use the fold out couch for a bed.
All in all, we were very pleased with the price and the quality of the room and hotel. Very, very beautiful hotel! Would stay here again!!

This place was okay. The room was large; the bathroom was very small with not even a towel rack--only a hook on the back of the door. The showerhead was not generous with its water output and there was no grab bar anywhere (for safety's sake). The white towels were stiff and rather gray. The continental breakfast was a surprise -- very nice in its own room. I used "Best Rates" and we probably got what we paid for. Durango's a neat town.

August 2004 - Nice hotel - free buffet breakfast is really just a continental breafast bar - Not bad - Happy hour - 2 free drinks per adult per night - Shirley Temples were great! - Pool closes at 10 pm - way too early for us - 12pm would be better even 11pm - If you want to rent a jeep I recomend you do it before you go - they sell out fast! - They rent Harleys too, but if you want to rent one reserve a year in advance! - Rent a Wreck has the pest prices we could find on jeeps, suvs etc...

The Silverton/Durango Train is great, but note, you may want to reserve the bus for the return trip, it is a looooong trip back to durango on the train!! Reserve the bus trip back when you buy your train ticket.

Jeep tours - Last August (2003) we rented two jeeps in Silverton (Silver Summet Jeeps - very nice people) and drove the Imogene Pass trail - if you love adventure, DO IT !!! - even if you don't love adventure but like old mining history, fantastic mountain views, wildflowers, and water falls galore, you will love it!!! Just take a really good driver with you that isn't afraid of heights.

“Great location - what's up with the check-in runaround?”

The location is great, service not good. We booked in when they were re-doing their parking lot, which they had not told us when we made reservations and alerted that we actually needed to go about 3 blocks around to the back of the hotel in order to park. You could not access the lobby area from the street, as there was also road construction (again, they did not alert us when we phoned in to reserve). They gave us a room that was ground floor directly by where they were doing fresh asphalt. The room odor was so bad that I went back to the front desk and asked for another room. They said they knew the rooms were filled with the asphalt odor (why didn't they mention this when you are checking in???) and they said I could go check out another room on a higher level to see if it was better. They said if it wasn't and I checked out I would have to pay for 1/2 day! I said, you are kidding - I walked from check in to the room and back and you want to charge me 1/2 day? That is a good reminder to view a room prior to checking into it!! I haven't had to do that for years! Luckily the upper level room was just fine - and many of them were available so I don't understand why they weren't up front about the odor on the ground floor and giving guests options at check in. the rates were the same no matter the level. It was just poor customer service all around. The next day staff at front desk were much more friendly, so I must have hit them at a bad time.

As I said, location is great! Next time we will make another choice in Durango, however.

“Mistake in room number but all was well”

It's right near the old town district. Very quaint. The room we stayed in was one with a jacuzzi and well worth it. We had a jacuzzi bath in our bathroom. The room was clean, pool and spa clean. I would stay there again. The staff was also friendly and recommended an excellent restaurant. There was however one mistake they marked down the wrong room number but they quickly fixed that and offered to upgrade us to a better room if we were not satisfied with the room we were suppose to get. Very nice.
