“The Best tucked away getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2007

I don't know if it was the snowy weather or being away, alone, with my wife for a few days, but this fabulous Durango B & B stole our respective hearts. We stayed for 4 nights so we got to know Scott the Innkeeper and his talented and attentive staff. Following our arrival we partook of the Inn's excellent on premises masseuse, Nicole for a couples massage before retiring for the night in our cozy, well appointed room with pirvate bath, step in shower and gas lit fireplace. Everything needed for an extended stay was there and breakfast each morning was freshly prepared by either Nicole or her Chef significant other, John. If you're lucky (and you enjoy chatting with young children) you'll get to meet one or more of the four of Scott & Ellen's delightfully conversant youngsters, not to mention the omni-present fat feline who patrols the Inn's entrance seemingly 24 hours a day, even in the snow!
We are already planning a return visit in the spring or summer to experience the Inn's colorful gardens and trees in full bloom. Located only a few minutes from historic downtown Durango, you'll feel like you're miles away quietly secluded in a Colorado forest. Lovely.

My daughter and I stayed at the Lightner Creek Inn in August, 2006, while visiting Fort Lewis College. We had initially only planned to stay one night at this beautiful B&B, but had such a relaxing time, that we ended up staying for three nights. We are probably the only guests that Scott and Ellen have ever had that have stayed in three seperate rooms over one stay. We had to change rooms nightly because the rooms were already sold out and we were adding additional nights. Thank goodness they had room for us! They made it very easy for us to move our luggage around and made us feel very welcome each day.

The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. We stayed in the Autumn Blaze, English Terrace and Mountain Breeze rooms. We especially liked the English Terrace Room because it opened up to a wonderful second story porch. It was great to have the morning breezes coming through the windows. When we first arrived, we were the only people there so we were able to snoop around and look at all the rooms and suites. They are all wonderful and each one is unique.

When we arrived we were welcomed by Scott, the Innkeeper. He is very pleasant and helpful with restaurant suggestions and things to do in and around Durango. They had wine, lemonade, cookies and crackers and cheese for us each afternoon. We'd grab a plate and a drink and sit out on the wonderful porch or walk on the beautiful grounds. The flowers and all the greenery were awesome! When we were there the creek was dry, but there were some nice benches, a gazebo and a hammock to relax away the days. There were several wild turkeys that roamed the grounds at dusk--fun to watch as they crossed the yard moving toward the fields. The jacuzzi tub was a welcome addition, but could have been much hotter for us. I bet it is fun in the snow!!!!!

Breakfasts for us were much better during the weekdays. They have two chefs--one female on the weekdays and one male on the weekends. We had two weekday breakfasts and one on Saturday. Each chef made gourmet breakfasts including fresh fruit and added touches. There was also cereal, hot chocolate, coffee and juices that could finish out your morning. You can eat in the sunny breakfast room and watch the hummingbirds have their own breakfast. For us, "city girls from Texas", it was fun to have the birds to watch.

There's a great fire pit on the patio that we turned on and used to make Smores. It was a mother/daughter bonding thing! Brought back alot of childhood memories for both of us! We met a lot of people too as we invited them to share our gooey Smores!

The Lightner Creek Inn is a marvelous, welcoming B&B. I would highly recommend it to families, romantic couples and anyone needing a relaxing place close to Durango. It's a great spot for families visiting Fort Lewis College too!

We hope to go back soon to see what life in Durango is like in the snow! Lightner Creek and Scott and Ellen's hospitality will bring us back time and time again!

This is a great inn. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfasts are incredible. When we were there the weather was awful, but our stay was improved by the friendliness of the innkeepers (and their adorable kids) and the guests. Little touches like free wireless internet and a washer and dryer were appreciated. A wine and cheese table in the afternoon was also a good way to meet other travellers. I'd recommend this place. One negative: if you stay for a while, you have to ask for extra shampoo and soap, but you'll get them.

  • Liked — The room and common areas
  • Disliked — The tiny piece of soap

As regular visitors to Durango, we were looking for an alternative to the noise and traffic of the major hotels in town. In looking at B&B alternatives, we "stumbled" into the Lightner Creek Inn. What a wonderful find! Not only was the room first class, but the service and solitude - yet proximity to town - provided a wonderful experience. The hosts - Scott and Ellen - were gracious and helpful. The wine and evening hors d'oeuvres were a relaxing and pleasant surprise.

We generally do not stay in B&B's on vacation, but there is no question that I will return to Lightner Creek Inn in our next visit to Durango.

We just returned from 3 fabulous days at the Lightner Creek Bed and Breakfast. It's a gorgeous property within a 7 minute drive into downtown Durango, but situated on a quiet country road. The wonderful owners and staff are friendly, helpful and sincere in their qwest to make your stay as delightful as possible. There is also a Licensed Massage Therapist on staff, with several different treatments available in a separate "spa room",Thursday-Sunday.Sadly,we didn't have time to book one during this trip.

The Inn itself is a 100 year old farmhouse that has been a Bed and Breakfast for several years.Scott and Ellen ,the current owners, have put many, many improvements into the buildings and grounds over the past year, including a brand new state of the art kitchen, updating the 9 tasteful rooms, and hiring a full time gardner and landscaper to tend to the beautiful gardens and pond.

WiFi,Internet, new TV's, many lounging areas outside, including a gazebo(perfect for a small wedding ceremony) and a fire pit, cozy throws and bathrobes in each room, and gourmet breakfasts had us relaxing in no time.A great library in the living room, with a welcoming fireplace, leads to the sunny breakfast area, which is cheery and warm, with a pot bellied gas stove in the corner. This was great,as one morning was rather chilly until the sun warmed things up ......great Indian summer weather!

There are numerous birds and even the resident wild turkeys on the property, and several deer were spotted each morning. The property is bordered by a 10,000 acre wildlife and bird sanctuary and the creek traverses the grounds. You feel like it is your own private paradise, yet you are just minutes away from shopping, great restaurants and incredible recreation 365 days a year.Durango is home to Fort Lewis College, and this would be an ideal place for any parent to stay while visiting. Also perfect for a wedding or special event.I think the hosts would entertain doing a variety of special events,so just contact them.We found Lightner Creek via a link to the Durango area and also Mesa Verde, but use Trip Advisor on a regular basis.I had several questions,so I did speak to Scott on the phone prior to booking online.

Our hosts were gracious and warm, even lending us a gear bag to take on our trips to Mesa Verde National Park, which is about a 35 minute drive from Lightner Creek.(This is THE Ideal location if you are wanting to visit the Park..highly recommend it!)

Wine, cheese and crackers, homemade cookies, and lemonade greeted us each afternoon.Breakfasts are wonderful and healthy fare.......fresh fruit, eggs,Southwestern specialties with homemade green chili, smoothies and oatmeal silver dollar pancakes with locally made preserves and honey...and GREAT coffee. The kitchen staff will even do a "Breakfast to go" boxed gourmet treat for you. There is even an extensive window box herb garden for year round use in the wonderfully designed kitchen.

We highly recommend Lightner Creek for it's charm and location, great hosts and their flexibility with requests, well appointed rooms (nice linens and down comforters)yummy breakfasts, and quiet and relaxing ambience. We are an active and adventuresome couple in our 50's and have stayed at many B and B's and small inns throughout the U.S. We would will definitely stay here again.

Gorgeous views, quiet, very clean, spacious property with plenty to do if you've just come to relax. It was so easy to make ourselves at home here, and we were encouraged often to do so. The public rooms are great, and we had them pretty much to ourselves. We stayed in two different rooms, both were great for different reasons. The two downstairs rooms are a bit noisy as they are close to the wonderful kitchen, but they also have the best patios/outdoor access. The rooms upstairs were all very nice, we did not see the suites in the other building. Hot tub was very nice, no restrictions on when you could use it -- which we LOVED. One of the most flexible (hot tub hours, use of public spaces, ability to book just one night at a time, last minute cancellations) I've ever seen. I'm afraid to write such a great review as now it will be harder to return, but return we will. This place is one of the best I've stayed at, and the flexibility in policies is one of the reasons why. VERY clean and great staff as well.

  • Liked — Beautiful property w/liberal policies
  • Disliked — Breakfast was not the best of B&Bs I've stayed at, but good.
  • Tips/Secrets — If you bring your own food and clean up after yourself, they'll let you use their AMAZING kitchen.

This was the first time we stayed at a Bed & Breakfast and we were extremely hesitant, however, we were pleasantly surprised by our experience at the Inn. It met all our expectations and more. The views were majestic, the grounds impecably maintained and the room reminded us of living a fairytale. We would highly recommend this B&B. The Inn Keeper was extremely accomodating to all our needs. His recommendations for our visit to Durango were extremely helpful especially in terms of where to dine. The facility was immaculate and the staff was friendly. Try it, you'll love it.
