We booked a motel room for 2 nights after reading the great reviews on this site.... what a mistake. To start, I was quoted a price of $92 dollars a night for a double queen room. I booked the room and received a confirmation the same day. A couple of days later I got an e-mail from the owner saying that all of the double queen beds were booked but she could offer me a double double-bed room. So no problem I took the double. Upon arrival I paid the double bed price, which was $15 per night cheaper. We got to the room, opened the door and right off the bat were hit with a very bad musty smell. My daughter was gagging....I told her no problem we'll just open the windows and get some air in here....but the windows wouldnt open so we had to leave the front door wide open. Right after we carried our bags in, here comes the owner. She says,oh I'm sorry, I mischarged your credit card and I brought down the corrected total for you and off she went. I looked at the receipt and found it was $30 more for the two nights. Now wait a minute, that is what I was going to pay for the nicer, double queen room. So I go to the front desk and try to explain that I think she overcharged me. I showed her my confirmation that I received clearly stating that I was going to pay $92 for the double queen room. Well, to make a long story short, she insisted that I was never given that price quote, even after I showed her my confirmation sheet. She basically called me a liar. She told me that her queen rooms never sold for under $125.00. She later contradicted herself by saying she had the right to change the price of any room at any time she wanted. Now wait a minute I say to her... you can't change the price of a room when someone has already booked the room at one price. She told me she could do whatever she wanted and that the motel had been in her family for 30 years. She told me I could leave if I wasn't happy about it and that she would refund what I paid for the second night. She followed that up with "good luck finding a place to stay tomorrow night since all the hotels are booked solid for the train festival." At that point, just on principle, I figured I rather drive to the next town and get a room then stay here a minute longer than I had to. So, I took her up on it and said I'd like the refund. I didn't want to stay at a motel where they were dishonest, changed the prices, and called the customers liars. Leaving was a great thing because we discovered several other quirks about the motel. One: the air conditioner really doesn't blow very cold air and the room never really cools off. Two: you can't run the air conditioner at the same time you run the hairdryer because it flips the breaker and everything goes dark. Three: the lock on the door was broken and we had a heck of a time getting into our room. Four: the microwave in the room quit working after 2 minutes as we tried to pop a bag or popcorn. Five: the only place to plug in the coffee pot was on the ledge of the bathroom sink, which is very small and not quite safe. Six: the coffee cups were dirty. All in all I would say.... STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOTEL. I wouldn't go back if it were the last motel in Durango, not even if I could stay there for free. We found a room at the Quality Inn and Suites and it was wonderful. Same price that I paid for the Caboose Motel, but the price also included a hot breakfast in the morning. The room was very clean, smelled good, had cable and all the amenities. And most important, the staff treated you like you were a valued customer unlike the owner of the Caboose Motel who treated you as though she were doing you a favor by letting you stay in her motel and told you to walk if you didn't like it.
