We had read about tubing on the river and had a great time, but theweb site we found was not accurate. If you ride the train or drive through town you will see people on the river...stop and ask them for advise. Walmart is well stocked with tubes for $19 or you can rent them from shops on the north end of town. You can ride a trolley from start to end take outs, but it is a few blocks walk. You will find Durango sites that discuss the walking trail through the town, it is beautiful to walk or bike, but it does not go through the historic downtown. One member of our group didn't tube and met the rest down the river, just drive around and look and pick a spot to meet before you go drop them off...again there are trolleys, we didn't try them out. There is parking and places to get into the river at several spots. We had also read about free air at the 32nd street put in......we couldn't find it and the friendly locals said they had never seen it. We just huffed and puffed and blew our tubes up. We took out near 9th street and it was not an easy task...the river was moving too fast and we didn't find a good path to the dock area. Again talk to the locals along the river, they were helpful. In mid June the river was cool but not cold, there were very slow areas and very small fun rapids. If you haven't tubed before just follow the locals! The teenagers were fun and helpful. An inexpensive afternoon of fun!!
