Such a unique experience. We had perfect weather and actually moved to the open-air gondola instead of our coach seats. Because we went in April, we only had the option of taking the winter train which takes you to Cascade Canyon. Its a lovely little spot right next to river which has plenty of picnic seating and a nice little .25 mile scenic trail. The porters (attendants) were seemingly train enthusiasts and loved to tell us about the area, about the train, and answered every question thrown at them! My favorite part was about how the town of Durango LOVES this train!! People came out from their houses, their businesses, and even followed us to different locations just to wave and greet us while riding! It is a two hour ride there, 1 hour at the site, and two hours back. Worth it!
