“Fun time but condo was bare bones”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

We stayed in the Cascades section, Snowden Building in a privately owned condo. The condo was much nicer than staying in a hotel room with my husband and granddaughter but it was definitely bare bones. They supplied what they had to. We made breakfast almost everyday but my husband had to make the bacon in a soup pot. There is an indoor pool, two hot tubs (without bubbles) and a grill at the check-in center. The pool and hot tub at Purgatory is beautiful, this is where you want to swim or soak. We had a shredded lamp cord that was never fixed and the small old fashion tv had the cable unhooked when we got there. Not the best condo I've stayed in. This location is half way between Durango and Silverton so be prepared to drive if you want to go out to dinner.

Room Tip: The ideal place to stay in Durango is near the Aminas River. If you stay at Purgatory stay at the ma...

We had a 2 bedroom unit here. All the 2 bedroom units face towards the pool area, and look out either over (on the 3rd or 4th floor) or at (on the 2nd floor) the HVAC units for the clubhouse. The units themselves do not have air conditioning, so in the summer it is a must to have the windows open. This became a real problem for us, for several reasons. First, the HVAC units run all the time, and are noisy. Secondly (and this was the biggie for us), the resort uses a recording of various birds making all kinds of noises, to try to keep the swallows from nesting. Unfortunately, the machine that plays that recording is attached to the back of the clubhouse and points directly to the 2 bedroom units. It also is played from early morning to late evening. So sitting on the balcony and trying to enjoy the views was completely ruined by the racket right below us. Finally, at least on the weekends, the resort staff do not enforce the hours or rules for the pool and hot tub. There were screaming kids (little kids, without adult supervision) in the hot tub and pool up to midnight several nights. Had we not had to have the windows open (ie, if we'd been there in the winter), or the unit was in a different location (meaning we'd have to have a 3 bedroom or larger, because that is the only location for the 2 bedroom units), that wouldn't have bothered us. But as it was, the combo of noises coming from below us really was annoying, especially at night.

However, the unit itself, as well as the resort, was very nice. It had a full kitchen, full sized washer and dryer, two full bathrooms (although no jetted tub, which was surprising), and a nice, large living room. The private clubhouse was really the highlight of the place...it had a huge gym on one level, and a game room (with pool table) and bar area on the upper level. The bar area served complimentary continental breakfast each morning, and if we had wanted food from the restaurant, we could have gotten it from the bartender and eaten it in the quieter clubhouse.

We never got a chance to eat at the restaurant, unfortunately, because it was closed for weddings or special events most of the time we were there. They did open up the outside bar and grill whenever the restaurant was closed, but it only serves sandwiches and burgers, so food was limited. It was hard to plan when we wanted to cook in the unit and when we wanted to try to eat out, since the restaurant closings were never posted or advertised...we only found out when we tried to go eat there.

So, we ended up grilling out quite a bit. There is a gas grill on the property, but it is in the strangest location I have ever seen at a resort. It is located right off the front door of the property, looking out over the parking lot (and right under the lodge's laundry dryer exhaust vents!!). It worked great...but wasn't quite the fun grilling experience we were hoping for, especially since there weren't even any chairs out near it.

The housekeeping staff was excellent, and kept the unit well stocked. The toiletries provided were in very small bottles, but the housekeepers replenished them whenever needed.

The resort itself has some great amenities in the summer, including a zip line and alpine slide. We didn't take advantage of any of them, but it was obvious all the kids were having a great time. We did take the chairlift up to the hiking trails above the property...beautiful views and an abundance of trails. However, you can avoid paying the $9 per person fee for the chairlift, and drive on the Forestry Road right next to the property to get up to the trails.

We really had a great vacation, but the noise just really dampened our enthusiasm for the Purgatory Lodge. We would consider coming back in the winter, when we could close the windows and the birds wouldn't be an issue, but never again in the summer.

Room Tip: Don't get a 2 bedroom unit in the summer months!!! The location is awful!

We had a wonderful suite, 950 square feet, with complete kitchen, washer and dryer, balcony overlooking the resort ski lifts. Check in was fast and courteous. Parking was inside and roomy. two large screen LCDs with Dish Network. WiFi was very fast and responsive. Used the ski lifts to access the hiking trails... scenery is beautiful. Also used our resort as a bouncing off place to access other nearby locations. Lodge has shops and dining on site. Food was plentiful and good. Service was very friendly. It wasn't too busy so at times, we thought we were the only ones there enjoying the view from our balcony sipping on wine. Our king-sized bed was very comfortable. On site activities include a cool zip line that goes through the resort, climbing walls, mini golf course, bungie jumping, pool, hiking and biking, and quite an adventurous slide.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Village Center and asked for a ski-slope side room to have the fantastic view.

Wasn't sure what to expect but on a daily basis I was impressed with the facility and staff at Purgatory Lodge. We got a mountain view condo. 3 bedroom with 3 baths. Nice kitchen with stainless appliances. Nice little covered patio. Knowing that it had a kitchen, we wanted to stop for groceries on the way up to the lodge. We scheduled a shuttle pick up for our party of six. $186 round trip to and from airport and he stopped at Walmart so we could get a quick lunch and purchase our groceries. We saved alot of money doing this and the kids enjoyed coming in from a long day of skiing to a home cooked meal. We did eat out twice. Tho a bit pricy... as I would have expected, the food was good. Portions were a bit small.
The Condo at the Lodge was plenty of room for 6 and very clean. One thing I didn't know, if you are a guest in The Lodge you get free complimentary breakfast... bonus. We may try that tomorrow... lol
There is a washer and dryer as well to do laundry. If there was anything we needed, the staff was prompt to accommodate. From the pick up at the airport, check in at the Lodge, the guys running the lifts to the people at the ticket counters... they all were very friendly and helpful with anything we needed. I would highly recommend The Lodge at Durango Mountain resort and we will be coming here again!

We decided to stay at the Purgatory Lodge for a quick ski get away -- boy were we disappointed. The Lodge was empty and they gave us a room facing a building. The food was terrible, and you had to drive about thirty miles to get to Durango. And very expensive for a nothing experience. And, they need to start taking care of their Mountain. The lifts are old and slow, especially at Lift 8. Next time I will be going to Telluride!!!

Great family ski area for intermediate ski families. Never felt crowded even though the ski resort was full. Our family's favorite was skiing to the back and hanging at Chair Lift 8. Totally uncrowded, lots of blue run choices and ski right up to Dante's for hot chocolate or lunch!

We stayed in a 3 bedroom, East Rim condo- #11A - for 3 nights - it was right across from where we checked in. The condo was great - decorated very nicely. It had a dishwasher and also a washer & dryer. There were 6 adults and 5 children in our party. I made my reservations through a website called Gateway Reservations - the girls there were very nice!! They went out of their way to help me find a place for that many people. We stayed in the Durango Mountainn resort, because by staying in the resort proper, we had access to their pool and exercise room. We had originally planned to stay in a vacation home outside the resort, but then we would not have had access to these things. You need your room key to get into the pool and exercise room.
I had asked for a condo with 3 queen beds, a bunkbed and a sofa bed. What I got was 1 bedroom with 2 bunks (4 kids in this room),1 bedroom with a queen bed and private bath, and 1 bedroom with a double bed and single bunk bed on top plus a bath in the hall. The bedrooms were all downstairs. Upstairs was a nice size kitchen, living and dining room and deck off the living room. All the bedrooms except the kids room had TV's and a large TV in the living room. Unfortunately, one of the adult couples had to sleep on the sofa bed - but they seemed okay with that. Everything was great except for one thing. We bought the adventure pass for the kids and 2 adults for one 4 hour period and it cost $180.00 - they only got to use it for about 2 hours and it started to rain and they shut everything down- it seemed like a big waste of money. Only two of the kids got to go on the Alpine slide - after standing in line for about 45 min - once it started to rain they shut it down- no refunds and no extra hours. So that was really disappointing. The next day we decided to go to Durango and check out the town and ended up taking the kids to a movie. We did make use of the pool and exercise room though.
So my advice would be -if you are planning on buying the adventure pass - watch the weather report first or go as early as you can. It seems to rain every afternoon about 2:00 in the mountains.
All in all we had a pretty great family vacation in beautiful Colorado. We went to two national parks, went to the top of Pikes peak(totally awesome) and saw lots of things I will probably never see again. It is so worth it! I got to see Colorado and spend 8 days with my adult children and all my grandchildren. What more could a person ask for. Life is good! Oh and the price was $232 a night! Great price for that many people!

Room Tip: East Rim condos are across from where you check in.
