We recently stayed at the Ramada Inn Downtown in Denver for 5 nights as part of our round the world trip.
We paid $85 a night, which I believe to be quite reasonable in Denver, true you are not quite in the centre of the action, but it is only a 10min walk to the pedestrianised centre. There is free parking available for those with cars (not us), and also a very handy shuttle service to all the local attractions. The shuttle isn't on demand, but regularly goes every hour and is a nice touch for those that have travelled on foot.
Check in was fine, reasonably friendly staff and a room on the 3rd floor. Room was very nice, quite big, bathroom was ok, overall we were very happy. Cleaning was spotless thoughout our stay. Reception was very nice, although we can't comment on the bar or restaurant as we didn't visit there areas. Probably the only downside is the slowness of the lifts, but as there are only a few levels, using the stairs was very quick. One other notable plus was the addition of a laundry room, this included a washer and dryer which was a nice bonus, and for only about $1 per load. There is also a laundrette right next door to the property.
I must disagree with previous comments on the location. It is only about a 10min walk from the main tourist area, with shops and restaurants abound. We found the walk down Colfax to be quite pleasant, and there were certainly never any homeless kicking around outside the hotel. In fact, the transportation links were good also, with a stop right outside the hotel which took you to downtown if you wanted to save those legs. A further bonus was that the hotel was located about 5mins walk from the Fillmore Auditorium, very handy when you've got tickets to see The Killers!!!! In fact there are also some nice little coffee shops, bars and restaurants in close proximity to the hotel.
All in all we were very happy with the stay at the Ramada. It is a lengthy transfer from Denver International, but this would be the same with all hotels as Downtown just seems to be miles from the airport.
As for Denver itself, we absolutely loved it and will return again when we decide to take in more of the rocky mountain area.
