I booked a room here through hyatt 2 months prior to my convention in Denver.
I am a smoker so I booked a smoking room, for Tuesday - Sunday. Upon my arrival, I was greeted warmly by the valet and doorman. I proceeded to the check-in desk, and was told that they DID NOT have a smoking room available. I told them I had specifically booked that type of room more than 2 months prior, but the front desk clerk continued to shake his head saying that it was only a request, not a guarantee. Upon further review of their web site, you can see that it plainly asks, what is your preference. This is not the first time this has happened to me with Hyatt, but I will NOT be booking a room with Hyatt, until they change their attitudes with regard to smoking rooms.
Additionally, I told them at the time of check-in I would not be staying through Sunday, that my plans had changed and I would be leaving a day early. They said no problem, however when i went to check out they said, "Aren't you checking out early? I said, "No I told you when I checked in I would be checking out a day early." The clerk assured me it was no problem, however my credit card was billed for the additional night. I am still trying to get that resolved.
Another issue, I returned to my room late the first night I arrived to a horrible sewer smell. I called down to have someone come up and smell this and was told it was a problem on the lower floors sometimes. At that point, I must say that the Night Manager finally stepped up to the plate and gave me a Smoking Room. Of course, I still don't understand why I wasn't given that in the first place. It would have been alot less stressful and hectic.
As far as the hotel goes, it was very clean and very nice. (Other than the 7th floor sewer problem) The staff was great with the exception of a few desk people. The location is good. There are other choices in the area and I just think putting travelers through so much hassle unnecessarily is something I would rather do without. What these hotels fail to realize is we have already gotten up early, gone through the hassle of flying, airport security, baggage, rental cars, going on work appointments and regular business hoping to just get to our hotel and rekax. When they don't live up to our expectations we don't forget about that. The Denver Grand Hyatt treats smokers like second class citizens, and I will stick to my preferred choice when traveling, The Hilton family of hotels.
