The Grand Hyatt is a great hotel for smaller conferences and business trips. I attended the Law and Society Association meetings held there. First, the staff was wonderful. They did an excellent job hosting the conference and did a great job with overall service. The concierge drew a great map for me when I said I wanted a long walk from downtown into a "cool" neighborhood. I ended up in Highlands, which should be visited for cool cafes, pubs, and eateries. A LONG walk, cab it. The hotel is also a great location. It is a short block to the 16th Street main drag, it is about a 5 block walk to LoDo (Lower Downtown...great renovated area with cool restaurants, shops, the Contemporary Art Museum, and a great great riverside park...also the Colorado Rockies stadium is there). For a the non-walker, there is a free light rail/bus that runs down 16th street to LoDo, so again. Great location.
The rooms were really great. Typical for an upper level business hotel, but not special either. Rooms were clean, beds are great, the rooms have free wifi as well. The Lobby is pretty great with two bars and a neat looking restaurant, although I chose to eat out.
As for things to do, the Denver Museum of Art is nearby (about 3-4 blocks). There is a little gallery in the mix between city hall, the courts, and Denver Art Museum that is not to be missed if you like photograpy. It is called Camera Obscura. Look it up on the net and then go. Also, right around the corner from there is a great English pub with hundreds of scotches on the pour called Pints Pub. Across the street from it is an old house with a great local breakfast place in it...much better than a Corner Bakery or chain joint. I cant remember the name but find Pints Pub and you are there.
Also, if staying downtown, walk down 17th Street until you hit 17th Ave, Go up 17th Ave about a 5-10 minute walk and you will find "Uptown". A series of hip bars, great restaurants, and some gay bar/clubs as well if that is your interest. One new restaurant worth going to is Olivea (719 E. 17th Ave)..small place, fantastic food, owned by the person who runs another fantastic place called Duo (which is big on the Denver scene). It is moderate to pricey but has innovative food with an mediterrean/Italian flair...but not at all really Italian if you had that last night. If you like great breakfasts and vegetarian fare then keep walking past Olivea and find Watercourse Foods (837 E. 17th Ave), which is incredible. I went there for tea and then the next day for breakfast. The best vegan (I am not vegan) biscuits...they were as good as any of the best non-vegan ones I have tasted. Im a southern boy so I know biscuits. Last, the best meal I had in town was at a tiny little place much further down 17th Ave. nearer to a park. About a 20 minute walk from the hotel so cab it if you dont want the walk. Go to Il Posto (E. 17th Avenue). It is billed as Italian, but truly takes the Northern Italian experience beyond. You would never know it by the look of the place. A GREAT tasting menu and wine pairings. If you want all reds in the pairings, they do it. GREAT service too and in a cool, trendy atmosphere. Great bar right next door that they will call you from if you have to wait on a table.
Another area of town not to be missed (about a 15 minute walk from the hotel) is the Santa Fe Ave. arts district. Ask the concierge about how to find it. A barrio/Mexican American area of town. Some great restaurants...great shops, but the galleries are awesome. It is also home to the small, but fun Museo De las Americas, which I have now visited twice. There are some scrumptious looking and very traditional mexican fooderies there too that are family own. Go to the Chaca Gallery there for very neat Mexican folk art and also local Mex-American talent.
Last, I went to Washington Park (a cab ride) to the Washington Grille. Good, another neighborhoody drinking/eating area. Also went to Osteria Marco in LoDo for lunch. VERY good. Dinner would have been also great. Great mussells, great bruschetta, and a nice little glass of house red at $5 a glass!
Denver is GREAT.
