“My Funny Valentine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

We stayed in the Valentine Suite the day after Valentine's Day and attended the casino-comedy-mystery-dinner. Pack your funny bone and leave your serious side at home! Black Jack with a magician, full bar, audience participation theatre, yummy food, crazy costumes, laugh till your face hurts, gracious host, gorgeous mansion, romantic bedroom. What more could you want?
L&D Fellner, Port Townsend, WA.

Room Tip: We think the Valentine Suite is the prettiest room, the bed was comfy, and best of all - I look good...

The hosts are extremely friendly and hospitable, and the honeymoon suite was gorgeous!! It has so much character and charm. There's a 3D tv and an iPad to use in the room as well. Then.... There's the murder mystery dinner theater.... SOOOO much fun. If you book a room, the tickets are buy one get one free!! The actors were great and and the food was good too. The best part was that we got $1000 in poker chips to play in the casino before dinner where we could mingle with the guests and the cast!

Spent a preValentines night Feb 13 as a surprise Valentines gift for my wife. Walter met us even though we did not check in till 8:30. He gave us a tour and explained the history of the building. We stayed in the Valentine suite with a 2 person jacuzzi tub and Indonesian decor. The room was super charming and we took a self tour in the morning. Don't miss the Ballroom on the third floor! Breakfast was delicious, esp. the fresh fruit and muffins. Located in the Highlands area, there are many fine restraurants nearby. Can't wait to return for a murder mystery night!

First of all, there should be a click between average and very good, because we did have a good time. This was my wife and my first experience in a B and B, so take that for what it's worth. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Walt, the proprietor, a SUPER nice guy. He gave us a brief tour of the main level, explaining the different kinds of wood, what went into some of major renovations and a bit about the history. I find that kind of stuff super interesting. I enjoyed learning more about the rehab through some of the "timelines" on the walls upstairs.

We were shown to our room. Very quaint. Nice big jacuzzi tub and a room layout that screams "old time", which was neat (shower not in the bathroom, etc). I loved all the old wood floors, the high ceilings, and the effort taken to bring the life back to the room. The plate of fresh fruit and the warm muffin in the morning were great as well.

Again, because this was our first time, we didn't know what to expect and don't know if this is normal for most B&B's, but we were pretty disappointed with the quality of the mattress and pillows (stayed in the Anniversary Room). The whole bed moved anytime one person jostled a bit and it felt like it might have been as old as the room. So, we didn't sleep well at all. Not the end of the world, but if you can, bring your own pillows.

All in all, it was still a cool place to get away from the kids for the night. We will be back to take in a Murder Mystery Dinner at some point...but will most likely drive home afterward.

What a beautiful place! Looking over the restoration photos and seeing what had been done was absolutely amazing. It was easy to find, right off I-25 and close to the renovated Lo Do part of Denver, including Elitches, Downtown Aquarium, Coors Field, Larimer Square, and the Pepsi Center. And just so comfortable and quiet, if that was your cup of tea, but offering other entertainments there as well. It was a wonderful break in the routine.

We enjoyed our stay at the Lumber Baron this Christmas season. The rooms are well appointed and the history is very interesting. Will definitely take part in the murder mystery show on our next visit.
