We were disappointed with the Hotel Monaco in general. As I've read in other reviews, the front desk staff was less than friendly and not at all helpful. It appears they have been trained to make little to no response to any inquiry with absolutely no apologies for any mistakes made by the hotel. We did like that the hotel was pet friendly and saw a regular parade of dogs in the elevators, hallways, and lobby. However, they promote that they provide any guest with a goldfish for their stay - as our young neice and nephew who live in Denver were going to visit us frequently at the hotel, we requested a goldfish upon check-in. Three days and six requests later - we finally had one delivered to our room two days before we checked out!
The absolute exception to any negative comment would be the bellboy/doormen/valet parkers. They were absolutely spectacular! Friendly, helpful, polite... I couldn't say enough good things about them. The decor of the lobby was also very interesting as shown on their website.
Our room was small, but generally clean. It looked out on the top of the interior roof. The third day of our stay, our room was not cleaned and the beds not made - they claimed the "Service Please" sign on the door had been turned over to say "Do not disturb." That is funny because we turned it to the service please side when we left for the day in the morning and some employee of the hotel delivered the goldfish the same day so they obviously had no problem going into the room even though they claimed it said do not disturb. They obviously knew the room was completely empty during at least part of the day. After requesting the room be made up in the afternoon upon our return, the turn down service that evening was ignored and no apology was made when we inquired as to why. There were mints left only two nights of our entire stay.
We ate breakfast at Panzino at the hotel which was good, but very expensive. The valet parking was pricey. I was also amazed that this hotel still charges for local calls.
I think we were likely treated on a 'lower' level as we booked through an internet site even though we had 'upgraded' to this hotel and paid quite a bit more to stay there instead of the chain hotel we had at first booked. Next time I will go down the street to the Magnolia or Brown Palace or to one of the larger hotels downtown such as the Hyatt.
