We were looking forward to staying at a Kimpton Hotel again because previous visits within this hotel chain were delightful. However, the Hotel Monaco in Denver needs improvement on their guest service…especially being a Four Diamond rated hotel by AAA.
We enjoyed the amenities and the location was fantastic. It was very easy to get around the city from this hotel. The 16th Street Mall (with lots of restaurants and casual shopping) is only one block away, and the free shuttle along the mall was very convenient. The hotel conducts a nightly wine receptive, and fresh baked cookies are available at the desk each afternoon. The room was very small compared to some other Kimpton Hotels, but the décor was refreshing. We also enjoyed having a goldfish in our room throughout the stay. The temporary pet can be requested at check-in based on availability. The beds and pillows are very soft and cozy especially after a long day walking around the city or hiking in the surrounding state/national parks. It was a little tacky that our small closet was filled with clothes that can be purchased from the attached boutique. The room was kept very clean each day, and the bathroom was spotless.
Having worked in hotels previously, I understand that a guest’s satisfaction is in the small details so that is why I’m listing only a few of the challenges we experienced. The front desk, concierge, and turndown staff were lacking in knowledge and service. We almost skipped a visit to the Rocky Mountain National Park (1.5 hour drive from Denver) because the concierge hostess told us it was closed for the season. We later found out that the park is open 24 hours a day all year. I called in advance to request a late check out, and the operator accommodated our request. I confirmed the late check out again when we arrived. On the day of departure, I confirmed with the front desk that we were checking out late, and they had no record of the request. However, we were told it was not a problem. Later, the housekeeper knocked on our door with the privacy sign posted because she was not informed of the late check out. We returned from shopping, and our keys no longer worked. We also did not receive turndown service on our first night, and I was told by the front desk that I should just call them “whenever that happens”. On the second night, the turndown service was only half completed.
Overall, we enjoyed the hotel due to location and amenities. We will not return to this hotel though because of the very poor service.
