When we arrived, the check in person appoligized because our penthouse was booked, so they upgraded us for free to a better room. There were good things and bad things.....the bad things were not really bad. I am not sure if they would keep me from staying at the Residence Inn Downtown again....Example: Mapquest was misleading. The Residence Inn was further from the train station than I thought and from downtown, but the free shuttle to the train station and to town canceled that out. The Inn is in an iffy neighborhood, but we had no trouble and the check in lady was very upfront about where it was unsafe to walk at night. When we first walked into our room it smelled musty and stale, but it had 3 TVS, a large furnished kitchen, two large comfortable rooms, and a very comfortable living room. I slept very well the two days I was there. I did not notice any smell after 15 minutes. We did not have maid service. I thought maybe that was how Inns worked. I asked the check in desk about it they apoligized. For some reason some rooms did not have their garbage emptied or any other maid service. We enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi, but it was very clorinated. I have never been in a more clorinated pool. I was surprised by the free breakfast. I am used to the "continental" free breakfast of cold pastries and hot coffee on a table by check in, but they had a room with table and chairs and lots of breakfast choices. My mother-in-law enjoyed making her own waffles. I enjoyed having eggs, bacon, and biscuits. We all thought the breakfast was good. The Thursday night vegetable pasta dinner was not as popular. My in-laws were unhappy with it, but they ate it anyway because they are "frugal" people who like free meals. My husband and I found the by-jeeves delivery menu in our room. You could order from many restaurants in the nieghborhood and have them delivered to your room for $5.00 delivery charge plus tip to the driver. It was very reasonable. We ordered from the Celtic Tavern. I had the venison tips with cranberrys, pecans, and wild rice. My husband ordered the shepards pie. We finished with the bread pudding. The delivery was fast and the food was excellent. In fact the bread pudding was the best that I ever had. We had a comedy of errors in the laundry room that was very frustrating. First the soap despenser was out of order, but the check in desk gave us free soap. After dumping the soap in we discovered the wash machine was broken. The check in gave us another free soap and quarters. After we washed our cloths, we dried them. We discovered the drying time they suggested was not enough so we had to scroung for more quarters. I think I might give it another try because any place can have one off moment.
