My husband and I are in the middle of a week-long stay at the Holiday Chalet B & B Inn, in Denver. The room is charming, the inn is clean, the people are very nice...BUT the internet connection does not work, and despite the polite inquiries of guests, it is still not working, 2 days after our arrival. The other issue is that we arrived during a heat alert (temps in the 90's) and the A/C in our room was not up to the task; although it cooled things off a little bit it needs to be replaced with a newer, quieter unit. Happily it has cooled off outside, so now we can open the windows..
Now for the good stuff. The innkeeper, Crystal, is very nice and her staff are also friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are wonderful, cooked to order: quiche, pancakes, bacon & eggs with all the appropriate stuff to go with it. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 10:00.
I like the homey decor in our room (#24). The room is on the back side of the inn, which is nice because Colfax Avenue is a major thoroughfare. There's a queen sized bed, a desk, a dresser, and a wicker rocker, and lots of prints of roses on the wall and nice thick rugs. Very comfy for a weeks stay. It also has a kitchenette, although not a microwave (other rooms have microwaves, though). There's a charming little nook with a table and two chairs, large closet, and bathroom with good water pressure, and a clawfoot tub/shower. The inn provides nice glycerin soap and a good quality jojoba shampoo.
All the rooms are decorated differently. It's quite charming. Not your chain motel, which is what we wanted to avoid. We were a bit concerned about the "dog-friendly" nature of the inn, but have had NO problems with dogs barking or otherwise (wish I could say the same about my neighbors at home). There is an incredibly beautiful Tiffany window in the stairwell, which looks different colors during the night and during the day.
Parking is on the surrounding streets, which has not been a problem. My husband has been attending meetings at the Colorado Convention Center, and he's been taking the bus downtown each day.
The inn is walking distance from a pretty park (Cheesman) which has a nice path for running/walking. It's also quite close to the Denver Botanical Gardens. The historic districts surrounding the inn are full of absolutely gorgeous big old homes, pleasant for walking; this seems like a good neighborhood. Colfax Avenue itself feels marginal, a few liquor stores nearby with street people, but I haven't felt unsafe. I would not go out alone at night, however.
Overall, I would stay here again, but I wouldn't count on internet access, and I'd ask for a room on the back again.
