Another trip to Crested Butte, another birthday celebration at Slogar. Everything was perfect. We had our own private dining room and they didn't even know we were celebrating! This is probably my 30th trip to Slogar - we go twice a year. It is a constant. The food never changes - even after the owners switched hands. In fact, we think the chicken got a little better - more seasoning. For those people who think it's too pricey - try this... Order 1/2 vegetarian orders and 1/2 chicken orders. Each chicken order comes with 4 pieces of chicken. Who can eat 4 pieces in one sitting? So, you can save money by sharing those 4 pieces and paying about 1/2 the price for the vegetarian orders. This chicken is just like what my mother used to make - it's NOT Kentrucky Fried Chicken - hallelujia! I hate KFC.
If you do have chicken left over, it's great on the slopes the next day with toasted biscuits.
This was my fourth trip to CB and my fourth trip to Slogar and I've never experienced anything but great food and service. The chicken and mashed potatoes are wonderful comfort food, the tomato chutney is such an unexpected delight. Even the ice-cream for dessert is high quality. From the first bite to the last all I can do is sigh with happiness.
Pass the bicsuits please and the chicken and the potatoes and the corn and on and on was most of the conversation at our table of 10 hometown guys from Ardmore, OK. in Jan. '09. We were hungry and they were ready to serve. If you're really hungry and like home style service, you'll love this place. One price and you eat all-you-want and then you can bag the leftovers for breakfast the next morning. Slogar's is on our list for next year's trip to Crested Butte.
Slogar is very overrated. Do not go expecting a choice between steak and chicken, unless you want to spend $15 extra for the steak. The sides are great (except watered down gravy), but the chicken is ordinary, fried and under seasoned. Deff recommend Somewhere else for the money (try Timberline or Maxwells).
