“Stunning views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

The views from this Ranch are absolutely stunning! My girlfriend and I participated in the Cowgirl Retreat in celebration of my 50th birthday! My overall rating of "excellent" is for the beauty and location!

My wife and I had a wonderful experience at SFR. The staff was really fantastic - from Cindy who helped with reservations and picking the correct package, to all of the helpful, PATIENT guides (we had never fly fished, shot an arrow or fired a shotgun before this trip). I don't eat at very high end restaurants often, but in my book, the food was 5 stars - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each night we had a cocktail hour on the porch with the other guests, then a great meal with fantastic deserts. Marley and Linda, the owners, often joined us which added a special dynamic to the evening. They are delightful people who genuinely enjoy hosting, meeting with, and getting to know their guest.
You can make your day as busy as you want. We especially enjoyed the archery range and timed archery course. Fishing in the stocked pond was fun and look forward to going out on the river next visit. The skeet shooting location was a short 4 wheeler drive away in an amazing location.
The overal location of the ranch is beautiful and was full of color at this time of year. The cabin was rustic feeling, but very clean with upscale bedding and bathroom. My wife loved the little extras like spa quality lotions and lip balm in the bathroom. Coffee was delivered to front porch at 7am every day!
A couple of tips for guest:
Take time to understand what is included in the different packages (certain activities, wine, food, drinks, etc) to choose the one best for you.
Plan accordingly for the drive - a scenic drive, but mostly two lane roads. It tooks us about 3 hours from Telluride, then about 5.5 hours to Denver airport when we left.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 2 bedroom Oak cabin. Bigger than we needed but we liked the extra space. Beds wer...

We wanted to go to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and we wanted to eat well, sleep well, and be lazy. In other words we wanted to get deep into the wilderness without having to pitch a tent, eat trans fats at a diner, or be stuck to a schedule. SFR surpassed our expectations easily. Beautiful drive getting there, but when you actually enter, it's like arriving at a ranch shangri la. Perfect. Lush vegetation. Birds and birdsong. Unique rock formations. Creek water music. Quality antiques. Views, views, views. Good thing we took care of the canyon activities beforehand. On the property, you can plan to fly fish at 9 am, but if it starts to rain, no problem, read a book instead and fish the next day or the next hour. More than just fulfilling an activity list, the people at the ranch want you to have a great experience. Thank you Ashley and Megan (horseback riding), Jacob (archery and shooting), Eliza (massage), and Chase (fishing). Chef Seth--great roasted squab. Kathy--loved the halibut in parchment. The on site owners, Maury and Linda, hail from Manhattan. People who understand the importance of a great bottle of wine and marshmallows at a campfire. A swimming pond with cattails and a huge jetted hot tub. SFR was not cheap, but worth every penny. If you are making a long trip from say, Britain, get the quintessential best. Or if you live in Colorado all the time, but you are having a milestone anniversary...

I am very late at writing this review and didn't realize till now that I had missed adding this trip but I remember it like it was yesterday. We bought a ranch vacation package at an auction for a charity event. They speak so fast, I wasn't totally sure what we bought but it was the best purchase ever! We spent 5 days at Smith Fork horseback riding, fishing, relaxing and even spent a day visiting the local vineyards. I love that they acquaint you with a horse and you ride the same horse for the duration of your trip. My horse was Tulsa. He was great! I wanted to take him home with me. The accommodations were very luxurious including very comfortable down feather beds. We enjoyed the evening happy hour with the other guests and gourmet meals every night. All the meals were spectacular. Sitting on the porch with a glass of wine, looking at the stars and enjoying the sounds of horses in the distance was so relaxing. They really give you star treatment!

Our family of 17 hit
Fork going in all directions when we saw all the options available for us! We climbed, rode, shot,
Swam, fished, rafted, watched a glass blower and danced! We slowed down to sit on our porches and enjoy
picnic lunches.
After a few days the spa became a popular spot and every meal was special in some way----from birthday cakes to champagne!
Owners and staff are very welcoming and seemed to be having a good time themselves.
It is a perfect place to handle different ages, interests and abilities.
----all of us would take this trip again!

Our 4th stay at Smith Fork Ranch & may have been our best one. We were there on opening weekend & the staff was ready to go! Seth was back as the executive chef which meant the meals were fantastic! The riding trails were open & the horses were in shape & ready to go. The new staff members were fantastic adds & we were happy to see many of our friends will still part of the SFR Team. This ranch remains an excellent location for families & couples alike. The addition of the mountain bikes & the shooting range added more activities to an already long list. Remains one of our favorites. Looking forward to returning next season, as well. The owners & managers are VERY focused on ensuring each guest has a fantastic experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in the newly renovated West Elk Suite. It was very large with very comfortable furniture...

We returned again in 2012 to spend the Holidays at Smith Fork Ranch. We were welcomed back like family & had a phenomenal three night stay. We were treated with 8" of new snow during our visit. Activities included three great horseback rides, a few sleigh rides & some scenic snow shoeing. As expected, the service & cuisine was First Class! SFR remains a gem on the Western Slope worth of a journey.
