“Enjoyable beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We spent part of two days enjoying the beach on Assateague Island. You pay for access to the National Park, which includes the beach area. There were portable bathroom facilities and an outside shower for cleaning off. During the day it was mosquito free. We visited in early June and it wasn't overly crowded. There was plenty of room to lay out towels for a family of five. We enjoyed the security of the lifeguard stations. There were lots of shells to collect. The waves varied, but were fun to play in and body surf. The sun is strong - be liberal in your application of sun screen. We tried to return for an evening campfire program, but even on a breezy night the mosquitoes were too much for us.

“Gov. Management has ruined this beach”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Visit before hurricane Sandy. Management is trying to limit access to the beach and has basically given little up keep to the beach area. Management says it wants to let "nature" take its course regarding the island YET they continually cut down trees for buildings no one uses, build build walks no one uses, etc. As they try to limit access they still keep building. Makes no sense. Hurricane Sandy may have just played into the hands of management as the island has a new cut through (inlet) and the roads were destroyed. Years ago you could see deer, fox, otters, etc., now you may see the ponies but nothing else. Its a shame as it used to be so pretty a place.

“Just Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We wish we had alotted more time for the beach during our short stay. We went in the late evening and only for the last hour the park was open but witnessed a grand sunset as well as enjoyed jumping the waves!

“Best beach on the east coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Love love love to take pictures. There is so much to see at Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. The Beautiful beach, dolphins, sea shells, lighthouse, the ponies, the wild birds, and the Main St. area of town.

“Campfire on the beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

We went to the Tom's Cove Visitor's Center on Assateague Island to get a free permit to have a fire on the beach. Fires need to be at one of three designated areas (therefore, only three permits are given out each day). Fires need to be out by 7:30 p.m. since the park closes at 8:00 pm. though. That wasn't a problem for us since we were there in the fall and it got dark by 6:30 and were still able to have a fire when it was dark.
