“Best German food this side of the Atlantic!”

My husband and I lived in Germany for many years, and as such, consider ourselves "experts" on good German food (although you could read "expert" as: Love to stuff faces excessively)

We have searched for good German food in America for the past 4 years and after visiting 30+ restaurants and bakeries have found nothing even remotely decent.

Edelweiss is certainly the best of the bunch. It doesn't compare to sitting down at my favorite Kartoffel Haus in Darmstadt , but it's the best we've found so far.

1. The potato salad is to die for! You'll get a small portion of it with the dinner "salad" which includes some cabbage, cucumbers and green beans. But you should order a large plate of the potato salad on the side. It's truly delicious and very authentic tasting. We tried to get the recipe, but sorry! It's a secret.

2. The schnitzel is just about perfect. Thin, tender and obviously high quality meat. The sauces however, leave much to be desired. I got the Jaegerschnitzel, and the hunters sauce just tasted like weak gravy mix you can buy as a powder at the supermarket. It was tasteless and thin. I prefer mine to be thick with lots of sauteed mushrooms. This one just had a small spoonful of mushrooms. Please note this is the same sauce they serve over the bratwurst.

3. Excellent brats, although if you like German food, you would definitely call these weisswursts. They had wonderful flavor, were nice and soft with the skin falling off them. Unfortunately they were covered in the weak hunters sauce that I talked about above. And the mustard was just standard French's or similar. But otherwise very good.

4. We went back the next day for lunch and tried the Zegeunerschnitzel. This was the only dish I was really disappointed with. Again, excellent schnitzel, but the sauce wasn't spicy at all and basically just tasted like bell peppers.

5. Also had the apple struedel. Delicious! Perfect flaky crust with marzipan added ( a nice surprise for me--I LOVE marzipan)

6. The decor is lovely--lots of bavarian paintings, wall hangings and beer steins all over.

7. The BEER! Absolutely perfect Dunkel.

8. The only problem we had was with the waitress (had the same one both meals). She spent the entire night fawning over (what I assume was) her favorite customers and chatting them up 3 feet away from us while completely ignoring my attempt to get a napkin, refills, more potato salad and finally desert. If the food hadn't been so good we would have left far earlier.

“A Bavarian Oasis”

On our third trip to Colorado Springs in 6yrs we finally 'squeezed" in time for this wonderful restaurant. My wife & I practically opened up this charming place built around an old schoolhouse;our stomachs were still on EDT. This highly reccommended German restaurant is on a tree lined almost residential street with little traffic. Once viewing the outdor patio there would be no other place to spend a cool, relaxing lunch. It had plenty of natural shade trees plus tiny water fountins.

We dined on the weiner schnitzel with red cabbage along with several ice cold bottles of hefe-weizen. Our waiter was helpful in selecting a very generous portion of Black Forest cake for dessert. It was a very relaxing , enjoyable , and very filling, 90 minutes. It was our Bavarian oasis during a very hot summer-worth every inch of our 1,300 mile trip there.

“Real authentic German food and service”

We ate at Edelweiss because of the awards that were advertized in the paper for their food. We were not disapointed. Service was great and the two different German combination dinners my wife and I sampled were terrific. Don't order appetizers unless your very hungry, the crabcakes were terrific but the dinners come with a salad that has potato, cucumber, cole slaw and mixed green lettuce all German style and very hearty as well as all the dinners. Plenty to eat, I have a big appetite and could not finish my meal. Resonably priced with all the German beers and wine available. Great restaurant. You'll be yoldeling when you leave.

“Authentic cuisine with Bavarian flair”

It speaks for itself when the Colorado Springs German Stammisch is held there on the second Tuesday of every month! Different rooms for private groups and large addition with awesome fireplace, a downstairs 'wine cellar' atmosphere, outside seating with the typical Biergarten look. Most, if not all, staff is German or at least German speaking with German cook and German owner. Monthly specials adertised on black board by the entrance, free German magazines for the interested readers of European gossip (Neue Revue, Freizeit Revue etc.). German beer on draft and Warsteiner, Clausthaler, Weizenbier and Pilsner Urquell in bottles. Combination platters and smaller portions for lesser appetite available. Very good selection on desserts. Easy way to find it- south end of Tejon, take left, just behind Blue Star brewery.

A wonderful German restaurant, locally owned. German singing weekend nights. We like sitting outside in the summer.
