“First time to try Ethiopian cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

This is while we were on vacation. This was my first experience at an Ethiopian cuisine restaurant. The staff was fantastic, the food was great. I love how they brought out samples of their teas, I wished all restaurants would do this! A small place, but not crowded. It was a little warm inside the day we visited. There was a circulating fan on to help, it was actually cooler outside than it was inside. I would definitely eat here again!

“You will leave feeling blessed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

First of all, let's get past the "I've never eaten Ethiopian food before" thing. Ingredients like chicken, beef, lamb, shrimp, various vegetables, lentils, and chickpeas are featured in Uchenna's dishes. Come try the food, the desert, and the unique Ethiopian coffee. If all you do is eat this wonderful food, you will be delightfully amazed. However, the food accounted for only a small portion of what made our Uchenna experience remarkable!

From the moment we entered this uniquely Ethiopian-themed restaurant, we felt as if we were being welcomed into an old friend's home. The hospitality is not of the contrived or forced variety that you find at other good restaurants. The genuineness of Maya's (the owner) and her staff's approach to customer service is second to none. During our entire experience, it felt as if we Maya was focused on making us feel welcomed and loved. This treatment did not come at the expense of the meal. Her staff's care for us is best described as being above and beyond what you would expect from a lifelong friend/mother/grandmother!

By the end of our meal, everyone in our party felt so connected to Maya that we insisted on snapping a group photo with her to help us remember what will quite possibly be the best restaurant experience of our lives.

We were just visiting Colorado Springs and happened upon this place because of the reviews on Trip Advisor. Rest assured, though, that if we are ever in this area again, eating at Uchenna will be a top priority.

Be willing to get out of your comfort zone to try this restaurant, and you will be richly blessed.

Maya, if you're reading this, we look forward to the day when we see one another again.

“Wonderful experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

The owner of the restaurant is a delightful Ethiopian woman who gave us the history of the food and culture of her country. The food was excellent. She informed us that we must eat everything with our hands and finish everything that she served -- very cute lady. Atmosphere suffers a bit with the fluorescent lighting and there is no liquor license, but I highly recommend this place for the experience.

“Like being one of the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

I cannot say enough about this restaurant.

We were visiting family in Colorado Springs and visited Uchenna's for dinner. The host Maya, made us feel like family...welcoming us to her restaurant and hugging my brother and sister in law like they were long lost friends (they had only been her once before, almost twelve months prior)

We all chose the speciality dinner plates that came with a choice of meat, lentils, vegetables and injera (bread) The meal was exquisite...flavourful, good balance of spice and fun (we ate with our fingers) When done, we asked Maya what some of the other dishes on the menu were like, to which she responded "you must try my rice'. Before we knew it a share plate of chicken and rice was on our table and we tucked in greedily (mmmm....it was good!) We finished our meals with coffee (sweet Ethopian coffee)

The meal was well priced. If I lived closer I would be here all the time. Maya hugged us all when we left and we all commented that it felt like eating at a much loved relatives house.

The restaurant is tucked away amongst other shops, but it is sooooo worth finding. The night we went, it was not busy. This restaurant is very deserving of it's number one rating.

Maya...all the very best. Your food is amazing and your hospitality is second to none.xxxx

“Great food, wonderful owner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2014

We had a great time at Uchenna on the 24th of July! The food was wonderful. Complex flavors, artfully prepared.
What really made our meal special was the owner. Seeing our hungry party of 10 (including 4 children), she brought out a few things for us to sample while we waited on our entrees. She reappeared several times during the meal to check on us, and sent us home with a few desert items for the road.
This place definitely deserves it's #1 status!
