“Cog Railway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2005

We had a great time traveling to the summit of Pike's Peak in the Cog Railway. (We didn't want to drive up ourselves anyway, plus we heard parts of the road were closed (?) when we went) The tour is safe & informative with spectacular views all along the way. The conductor was a wellspring of knowledge & entertaining. Yes you do sit close to those around you but it was fine w/ us. And there's no bathroom but they give everyone ample warning of that before you go up. Be sure you bring/wear cold weather clothing-it was 60 degrees at the base but 14 at the summit, -30 with the wind chill! Wear appropriate footwear as there are icy patches too-I was wearing sneakers, had difficulty navigating over the ice (others in sneakers were fine. I need boots in such slippery conditions). The initial headrush of being at 14,000+ feet is dizzying but you settle in eventually. Words can't describe the views up there, the scenery at the summit inspired "America The Beautiful." You don't have tons of time at the summit, but enough time to go to the bathroom, check out the gift shop, have a snack (better to buy one at the station before you go than wait in lines at the summit) and walk around a bit (if you can get past those ice pathces!) A great family tourist activity.

“View is worth the white-knuckle drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2005

Our family (husband, myself and teenage daughters) took the drive up to Pikes Peak at the end of July 2005. It seemed to be recommended by everyone who has been to Colorado.

The drive up can scare the daylights out of both the passengers and the driver. There are no guardrails on the dirt road, but there are pulloffs where you can stop and regain your composure! The driver will not be taking in the beautiful scenery---they should keep their eyes on the road.

Once you are on top, put your sweatshirt on (it was 40 degrees) and enjoy the view. We thought it looked like another planet up there, being above the tree line makes things so sparse. You are also above the clouds and we could see rain coming down in one area, while it was sunny in another. I could go on and on, but that might bore you, just go and see for yourself!

It was an experience that we will never forget. And one last thing, there is a train you can take up to the top--no stress that way!

“Its a lot of fun. Worth the time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2005

We had more fun driving the old gravel road to the top. Be sure your brakes are in top condition for the trip down. We would come back.

“Cog Railway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2004

We road the Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak and it was a neat experience! I would recommend it if you visit Colorado Springs. However, the seating is tight - six adults together....3 & 3 facing each other. There were 3 in our group so we had to touch knees (literally) the entire way with 3 strangers across from us. One had a huge backpack which made things even tighter. You do not get to request seats and may not get to sit with others in your group. Our train car was packed due huge groups from tour buses. The seating was uncomfortable plus there is no bathroom and you spend hours on the train. If you're not sitting by a window - you don't get to see as much. But the views are beautiful of forest, rocks, waterfalls, and lakes! Before you get on the train, they try to "force" you to get your picture taken by them in front of their sign - of course it will be developed into an expensive package deal you can buy at the end of your trip. We told them NO and they tried their best to convince us by arguing with us. If you don't want to be part of their "tourist trap" scheme - keep saying NO. They CAN NOT prevent you from going on your trip if you don't want them to take your photo. The visit at the top of Pikes Peak is very quick - about 20-25 minutes, so get in the check out lane at the gift shop ASAP! It's a neat experience and definately worth doing once in your lifetime!!

Well, the Cog Railway is the best way (besides hiking the 13 mile Barr Trail) to see Pikes Peak. You don't have to worry about driving off the side of a mountain, and you are in the middle of Pike National Forest, not behind some grandmother from Nevada driving her Buick at 20 miles an hour! Actually, Toll Road is pretty but can get dusty and when wind blows, can do some pretty good pitting of your vehicle!

Best train times are early AM or last train of day...last trains tend to see more bighorn sheep (June, July and Aug)....
