My husband and I took a road trip in July from Ohio to Colorado. We were headed to Great Sand Dunes NP first, so I needed to find a spot to stay on our second night of traveling that would put us within a few hours of the Park. If you're coming across Kansas from the East on 70, then pick up route 40 to start dropping south, Cheyenne Wells is just over the border in Colorado.
This old Hotel/B&B (it's called a B&B on the web site, but it has the feel of a small hotel) was very nicely decorated and renovated, with a beautiful entry way and a very attractive, comfortable bar area in a separate room. The rooms were also attractive and comfortable, and the owners were great! We arrived on a Sunday night, so, in this very small town, not much was open in the way of food. One of the owners directed us to a local bar/restaurant (the Lazy Aces, I believe) - the food was good and the people were very friendly. Breakfast at the hotel was delicious – the sausage, baked in little bread pockets with some apple filling, was out of this world. The rooms are very reasonably priced, and were perfectly clean; plus, we had a little bottle of champagne and two glasses waiting for us in our room. We had a wonderful stay at the Plains Hotel!
