“Good Fondue, Unattentive Service”

Swiss Haven Restaurant

I would give the food a 5, but our service was not great. I had to get the hostess to see if our table had a waiter after sitting for 10 minutes for acknowledgement. We ordered the fondue voyage for $45 per person. This included a soup or salad, excellent cheese fondue with bread, meat/seafood with vegetables and a chocolate fondue for dessert. The food was tasty. Our flame was out of fuel and again I had to get up an flag down our waiter. He just did not check with us often enough. We thought our meat was cooking only to find it raw because there was no flame. Another thing I found wrong was the dipping sauces were served on the same plate with the raw meat. I doubt the health department would consider this safe food handling. My waiter argued with me that this was safe. I don't believe it. Cross contamination is always a concern with fondue. To make up for our flame burning out and keeping us waiting he brought us extra meat to set things right. Definitely the correct thing to do. The temperature of the restaurant was so hot that another table propped open the window with their silverware. I thought the food was great, but our server was very inattentive and that marred our overall experience. For the price of our meal we should have great service too.

We have been visiting this Fondue House for many years every time we vacation (ski) in Breckenridge & its still wonderful. Good varied fondue choices + other entrees if you ever get fed up with their fondues. I felt the portions were bigger this year which was an improvement but the atmosphere, food, wine and staff still very good. We have always found this restaurant full with people waiting-which tells you something.

I thought I had enjoyed good cheese fondue in my day, but the Appenzeller fondue at the Swiss Haven will be my new standard. It was incredible, and not at all too "strong" if you enjoy cheese. (The menu declares this its strongest flavored fondue.) We ordered it with sides of red potatoes and apples to dip and swirl in the luscious kase. The potatoes were perfectly done and brought in a basket like they were hot rolls. The apples were the only hint of a disappointment in the meal, as they were regular old red delicious chunks that started to brown at the table. Next time, I'll have my Appenzeller with pears and potatoes.

There's also a nice selection of meat fondues and plate-based Swiss dishes (both traditional and contemporary). We tried the chicken with prosciutto and bordelaise sauce and did not regret it, though it was maybe a little salty for my taste.

Be sure to call a couple days in advance for reservations. We were grateful to have done this, as Mr. Owner explained as he seated us that he never has an empty chair in his restaurant between 5-10pm from Thanksgiving to April! There's good reason for this: After a day of skiing, what could be better than a pot of molten cheese and glass of wine (aside from these things and 30 minutes in a hot tub)?
