“Super Elkhorn!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

The Elkhorn Lodge is a high end development. The interiors of the Lodge and the units are first rate and well maintained. The location is outstanding with easy ski-in / ski-out capabilities with the Elkhorn Lift 50 feet from the door. The staff is truly outstanding with a level of service that is first rate.

It is quiet and peaceful and the building is an easy 5-10 minute walk from the village. There is underground heated parking.

Great spot to stay in Beaver Creek! Beautiful views. Friendly attentive staff and superb amenities! Ski in/out with adjacent Elkhorn lift and return trails through Beaver Creek village. Underground parking! Workout facility is excellent. Lovely mountain lodge architecture without being pretentious. Easy walk to the village or use convenient dial-a-ride transportation.

This ski lodge is a gem. It is particularly a good value. We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of February, a Friday through Tuesday stay. We occupied a 4 bedroom condo, which (as I understand it) is the only 4 bedroom unit in the lodge. The price for all 4 nights for 8 people in 4 bedrooms was about the same as the price we would have payed PER NIGHT at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek for less overall square footage. We have actually stayed at the Park Hyatt twice in the past. It is wonderful, right on the slopes. But, you really pay up for the location. The Elkhorn Lodge provides many of the same benefits, but at a dramatically lower price point because it is located near the lower end of Beaver Creek Village and not right up on the slopes. We paid approximately $3200 for the 4 night stay at Elkhorn. I priced out a similar scenario for our party of 8 at the Park Hyatt, which would have involved piecing together two separate suites just to get enough sleeping capacity for 8 people, and the price per night would have been in that range. The Park Hyatt is great, but the price point is simply much higher.

At the Park Hyatt, you literally walk out the door onto the slopes. The Elkhorn Lodge is also ski-in, ski-out. But, they accomplish that by having a chair lift that leaves right from the hotel. The chair is a slower, older chair (not a high speed, detachable design), so that first ride of the morning out of the hotel is chilly and slow. But, it gets you up on the mountain, and then you can ski off to whichever side you choose. The trail from the top of that Elkhorn chair gives you the option to ski over to the main Beaver Creek side (which we much preferred) or to go the other direction to the Bachelor Gulch side. To get back to the Elkhorn Lodge, you ski on a rather fun trail that winds through the Beaver Creek village and takes you right back to the back side of the lodge where the base of the chair lift is located, and where the ski locker room is conveniently located.

The lodge is done in the classic western Rocky Mountain style ski lodge motif with heavy wooden logs and beams, a large stone fireplace in the main lobby, and lots of warm brown tones. It is just really inviting. It looks and feels like a high-end ski lodge, not like a low-priced bargain property. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is heated underground parking right under the lodge, with one designated parking slot that matches your room number. We drove a rented GMC Yukon XL from Denver International Airport, so it was really nice to have this dedicated, heated, covered, underground parking space available. The elevator goes right from the parking level up to any of the floors of the lodge. The ski locker room is also on that level, so when your ski trip comes to an end and you need to pack up your skis in their ski bags and head back home, you just drive your vehicle down to the appropriate end of the parking garage and load up in a warm and dry place.

There is a free shuttle bus that will take you anywhere in Beaver Creek Village that you want to go. So, the fact that the Elkhorn is located somewhat away from the heart of the village is not much of a drawback. The bus will take you anywhere in the village that you want to go. You just ask the front desk to call ahead for the shuttle, and about 10 minutes later, the shuttle is right there at the front door of the Elkhorn. Then, to return to the Elkhorn from the restaurant (or wherever else you may have gone), the shuttle is called again and back you go. You can actually walk up to the area of the Vilar Center, ice rink, Park Hyatt, and other shops and restaurants right at the slope side. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes (uphill to get there, downhill to walk back).

Our 4 bedroom condo was really enjoyable. It had a lot of room, probably around 2000 square feet (somewhere in that range). The kitchen area was beautiful with nice appliances and countertops. It had a living room area right in front of a fireplace with a living room/kitchen table (open floor plan, kitchen and living room as one continuous space). Then, it had 3 bedrooms on the main level, and a 4th (master) bedroom on the 2nd floor along with a loft space with a large screen TV and large sofa for TV or movies as you wished. All of the bathroom fixtures were high quality with nice showers. There were dedicated bathrooms for each of the 4 bedrooms.

There are two outdoor hot tubs with a partial view of the slopes. There is no actual swimming pool. There is no restaurant at the Elkhorn either, but there is a nice bistro in The Charter, just around the corner and slightly up the hill from the Elkhorn. It is called the Black Diamond Bistro. The food was excellent there, and it was close and convenient.

If you are a family and somewhat budget conscious, but want a high end, ski-in, ski-out experience at one of the best ski resorts in North America (in my opinion), then the Elkhorn Lodge might be your place too.

I lived and worked in Beaver creek for Ten years, returning every year with my family to ski and catch up with friends. I have stayed with my friends in their beautiful Ski in/ski out home in Bachelor Gulch. This year, however we decided to do something different and stay in the Elkhorn Lodge. First, let me qualify this review by telling you that I am in the service industry...so I really get granualar and critical when it comes to Food, beverage and lodging.
I realize that some items are more important than others to each visitor, so let’s start with
Communication:
With that said....our Elkhorn journey started within an hour of reserving the space.
Kathy Allen, General Manager ( and Bon vivant) treated us as VIP.
Within an hour of booking we were contacted by Beverly, Reservation manager, to guide us thru the process and to insure that our needs were met.
Every online question I had was addressed within 30 minutes.
Upon arrival, we were met at the entrance t by Ross and Mark to unload baggage and offer a warm greeting. They even parked our car in the garage and brought our key to the room.

Accommodations:
Everything was spectacular!
The Elkhorn has been around for 10+ years and after that time you should see the 'aging' signs, but there was none of that. It looked like it had opened 6 months ago. Everything was clean and very well maintained.
Our room was large, airy and very clean. Linens and towels were new. Beds were comfortable.
The rooms were spotless.
The Gym was well appointed and had only the best equipment in it (Landice treadmill) !!!

Service:
Any place is made or lost on the quality of the staff.
Period.
I have 2 boys, 8 and 13. One of my boys developed a fever and earache. The staff went out of their way to find the nearest walk-in to get him treatment and called to ask 'How it went' on our return.
Kathy should be proud of her staff and the Vail Associates should know that the Elkhorn Lodge is in the hands of a very professional, personal General Manager.
Great job and thank you for making our stay VERY memorable.
We will be back next year!

From the moment you walk into the lodge you feel like you are home. Well if your idea of home is being greeted by a friendly staff person who quickly learns your name, a roaring fire in a beautiful fireplace and hot chocolate or coffee. Needless to say the start was as good as the rest of the stay. First impressions were not just show, the staff and accommodations are first class all around. The FREE shuttle to anywhere in the village is the "bomb".

We've stayed at a number of different places in Beaver Creek but by far the best place to stay is Elkhorn Lodge. With the lift right out the back door it truely is a ski in ski out lodge. The lift is kinda slow but who cares; do you have some place to be? We stayed in a two bedroom unit which was very clean and had great views of the mountain. The staff was excellent and very accomodating to our needs; what ever you need just ask. Getting up to the main village area was easy; either call for a shuttle or if you want to walk it only takes about ten minutes. I definitely would stay here again.

First, let me add my voice to those that acknowledge the excellent staff and customer service at Elkhorn Lodge. From start to finish, they were pleasant, helpful and gracious. Our three bedroom condo was well appointed and clean. A few issues, however, keep me from giving it a five star rating. Others may not have the same problems, or not be impacted, but they should be pointed out.

Our unit was 306, at the very end of the south wing. The first night of our three night stay, we were awakened every time the heat cycled on (it was 0 degrees, so this was not infrequent) by 10 seconds of VERY loud knocking that was impossible to sleep through. The next morning, we brought this to the attention of staff, who immediately sent someone to rectify the problem. The problem was solved, however, after the fix, the temperature in the great room began to fall, despite raising the thermostat. When the indoor temperature reached 60 degrees, we called the front desk and they sent a maintenance man. He explained to us that keeping the heat regulated on the end units was a constant struggle. We could either have the loud banging in our bedroom or a cold great room, but he would try to reach a happy medium. We were able to live with the cool great room, which he was able to improve slightly without bringing the banging back, but sketchy heating in 0 degree weather and excess noise in the bedroom is something that we shouldn't have hed to deal with for the price we were paying. Again, staff was very responsive to our complaints, but it didn't negate the fact that we went without sleep one night and froze one day. I'm not one to ask for bill adjustments, but think one should have been offrered by management in this case. This may not be an issue in other units, but
I would avoid units near the end of the wings.

The second issue deals with location. Elkhorn Lodge is about as far away from the village as you can get. I'm not saying you can't get there on foot, but it is HEAVILY uphill. I wouldn't recommend it. Several reviewers have lauded the shuttle service as making the distance from the village a non-issue. I can agree to a certain extent, however the scheduled service ends at 5:00. After that, you can order a complimentary ride, but service is hit or miss. We waited for 30 minutes on one occasion and over 20 minutes twice more. Waiting outside for 20 minutes in 0 degree temperature is an issue.

The upside of the location is the proximity to a virtually private chairlift that provides access to Bachelor Gulch and the Beaver Creek mountain. Beginners do not need to access this chairlift because the only routes down from this lift are catwalks. It is not advisable to use this lift to get a beginner skier to Beaver Creek or Bachelor Gulch ski school. Take the shuttle instead. If you are a proficient skier, on the other hand, it is a very convenient means to access the mountain, just steps from the ski lockers. There is also a trail from the base of Strawberry Park lift that gives ski in access, but it might require poling by some skiers.

Bottom Line, if you are proficient skiers, get a unit that doesn't have heating issues and don't mind waiting for shuttles in the evening, this is an outstanding option. The people are fantastic. I'll point out that we were at Beaver Creek during the New Year holiday, so the shuttle problems may have been simply an issue of overuse. May not be a problem at other times.

Room Tip: Avoid units at the end of wings. Heating is spotty.
