“Fantastic views great cabins!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

This wasn't our first trip to Colorado . In fact we lived here for 12 years back in the 90's. we have never really explored the area around Durango so we ended up here on the north end of Lake Vallecito. We stayed in the Kodiac Cabin. Three bed rooms and one bath. Two bed rooms have double beds and one has two twin beds. Living room feels big and there is a wood burning stove. Free fire wood as well. Very clean and beautiful! Fully stocked kitchen , minus the food, but there is a small grocery store less than a hundred yards away . Very small but has most essentials. Bayfield is just 17 miles away with full sized grocery stores, bank, and fuel. Pat is the owner of the Lodge and is a real pleasure to talk to. Very eager to help and makes sure your stay is comfortable one. There is a community fire pit, horseshoe pit, volley ball net and a small swing set for the little guys. The Bear Law lodge was a great value, with good rooms, and amenities all around.

We stayed at one of the vacation homes which are separate from the main property and cabins. We made our reservation very close to the time of our arrival. The managers usually require prepayment by check or money order by mail prior to arrival, but they recognized that there was not enough time for this. They were very nice in suggesting that we could prepay with our credit card instead which we did. Upon our arrival we easily took care of the rest of the payment the same way. The managers were very nice and gave us all of the information we needed and there was no ambiguity about the rules. They then had us follow them down the road by car to the place where we would be staying, which was several miles away. They did not require us to come all the way back to the office for check out which was nice.

The vacation home was very nice, with views of Vallecito Lake from almost every window. It is located about 50 - 100 yards up a steep hill from the lake edge. The main Bear Paw Lodge property is not on the lake. The cabin home is fully furnished with plenty of bed linens, towels, dishes, pots and pans. The inside ceilings and walls are all paneled with beautiful glossy finished pine. We had plenty of privacy and quiet here, with a little road noise occasionally when the windows were open, but not bad at all. There is a small stream nearby that we could hear trickling. The person who owns the home lives upstairs and rents out the two lower levels where we stayed. There are rentals at the nearby marina which is easy walking distance away. If you're looking for a place to stay that's quiet in a somewhat remote area away from the crowds, this is it. We really enjoyed our stay here!

Our second visit to this lodge was terrible. The owner misrepresented the rules about pets, placing us in an embarrassing situation. We were rudely accosted by the owner in front of other guests. We offered to leave early and were rudely told we would not get a refund. The cabin (Teddy) was full of spider webs, the shower and toilet were filthy, and the supplies they offered were skimpy. We will never go back.

I am sorry to hear that this guest felt like the rules for pets were "misrepresented".
We allow one dog per cabin that is under 30 pounds. The pet must not be tied up outside the cabin, and if the guests leave for the day the pet must be kept in a kennel cage inside the cabin.
Pets are not allowed to be left in vehicles while on Bear Paw Lodge property.
Pets are required to be on a leash when outside of the cabin, and owners are required to pick up after the pet.
Pet owners must respect other guests in regard to barking.
