We visited the Napa Valley in early September; I was SO looking forward to Ad Hoc. The concept sounded terrific and we read many rave reviews. We were very disappointed by our dinner. The salad was just ordinary, the veal was tough and the brownie for dessert was a brownie -- nothing to get excited about. By time we shared a bottle of wine, our bill was fairly high. I like to cook and could have done a far better job of preparing this dinner. Very very disappointed; we expected so much more from a Thomas Keller restaurant. Maybe we were just there on an off night, but our dinner did not even come close to matching the reviews I had read on this forum.

Let me say, without Ad Hoc our Napa Valley trip just would not be the same. My husband and I spent 5 days up in the area, and pre-planned many things based on recommendations and word of mouth.
However, I am proud to say I found this one on my own. I, of course, as many others, wanted to dine at French Laundry (also on of Keller's restaurants) but could not bring myself to dish out the money. So I found out he actually has Ad Hoc as well that has gotten rave reviews.
What a place. What food! What service! You have to come here with a completely empty stomach. The food comes as a prix fix menu and you may think you will not be full after, but you will be.
Our waiter (among many people who stopped by to check on us) Dan, was SUPERB! Just a nice guy, you can tell without even knowing him, cordial, friendly, and always attentive.
We had this Braised Beef that we still dream about! Its a must go, but make sure you make reservations!

During a recent trip to Napa we dined at Adhoc. My wife typically spends a great deal of time determining what to order so Adhoc’s concept of you eat what they are cooking that day made ordering a breeze. Our food was well prepared and the service was great. The only downside is that the place is very popular so if you don’t want to commit to dining there unless you know what they are serving you might not get a table. My advice is to make a reservation and go with it.

We went here for a celebration meal and had a woniderful time. We booked a month in advance...and we were served promptly. Since this is somewhat "you will eat what they serve" place - we were delighted with our dinner (asparagus, osco bosco, a cheese course, followed by dessert.). We went with the server's choices of wines by the glass to pair with the food. We had an excellent Napa Valley wine for the asparagus course, but were only offered a choice of a European wine for the osco bosco. We've started to see this happen in Napa where the restaurants are featuring not local Napa or even Sonoma Valley Wines, but featuring European wines. This is ok - but when in California, we'd prefer they'd feature "local wines" for their pairing choices. Overall, the food and wine was excellent, but did want to comment on this, as we find it amazing that this is happening with the # of fine wines that can be offered in California.
