I'm planning our summer 2012 Napa trip, and reflecting on our summer 2011 trip. There is one aspect I refuse to repeat, and that's the trip to the French Laundry.
So I'm looking at my menu from 6/5/11 and as I read over it, I think, "Wow, do I really eat all of this?" The answer is no. I guess I am too much of a simpleton to enjoy this type of food, but I thought I'd mention it, in case you were devastated you couldn't get a reservation. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.
As I look at the 9 course menu, I reminded that I really didn't enjoy anything aside from the amuse bouche: gruyere filled mini brioches and salmon cornets, and the shortbread cookes we were sent home with--they were to die for. I am a HUGE dessert fan and I didn't care for my dessert or the chocolates. Who doesn't like the chocolates? Devastating.
The service was great and our lead server was the perfect combination of professional and friendly. She was awesome and somebody I would like to have over for dinner. My husband loved the presentation of each course with the the changing of the flatware and all the ceremony. He thought it was beautiful.
We dined upstairs and there were five tables total, I believe. It is a quiet atmosphere, and we were there for so long, we started to feel like a little community. Some of our neighbors, who had enjoyed several bottles of wine, even toasted us during the dinner. It was pretty funny.
Much of the food is served nearly raw. I didn't touch the lamb and feared the pork belly. My husband ate it all up, but at 1am he may have regretted that: he became ill from both ends ;) It wasn't the alcohol, I assure you. We shared one bottle of wine over a 3 hour meal...3 hour meal (Gilligan's Island tune).
So after this experience, I though Tom and I couldn't be frends, but then I went to Ad Hoc. My cup of tea...barbeque night. Yum! This is more like it. So if you are a simpleton like me, Ad Hoc may be more your thing than the French Laudry.
