“Delightful Mother's Day Brunch”

We went to the Napa Valley Grille yesterday and we all agreed that the Mother’s Day brunch was just about as close to perfect as you could get. There is a certain charm about this restaurant, which is elegant and inviting, both inside and out. It is just what you would expect while visiting the wine country in the beautiful town of Yountville. On this particular day the atmosphere was lively and festive, not stuffy at all. It was packed when we arrived, but having made reservations we were seated promptly with a view of the mountains in front of us. Our daughter especially enjoyed making the complimentary bouquets that were include with our brunch for both her mom and grandmother- a little extra touch really added to the whole experience. Out waiter was knowledgeable, funny and courteous. As for the food, it was absolutely wonderful! There was a prefixed menu with quite an assortment to choose from. The Sonoma Duck starter on the sticky bun was out of this world! Sounds like an unlikely combination, but it was fantastic! Everything, and I mean everything from the assortment of breads to the chocolate lava cake we ordered at the end was outstanding. The dishes we enjoyed: New York Steak and Eggs (meat cooked to perfection), Crab Relano (no skimping on crab or flavor here), and Eggs Mornay with two types of salmon. A few small complaints: there was not much to choose from on the children’s menu. Unfortunately not all children like peanut butter and jelly. Some, like my nephew, are extremely allergic to peanuts. Also, when things slowed down and the chef came out of the kitchen, he lingered near the workers rather than visiting the tables- another extra touch that would have been appreciated and good for business too. Lastly, it sure would be nice if they could put on some classy instrumental music rather than the eighties stuff they had both this time and the last time that we visited. It really takes away from the ambiance. Overall, it was a delightful experience. Hope Chef Lyman does it just the same next year. We will definitely be back!

We sat outside on a perfect October day and enjoyed the Harvest Platter that consisted of coldcuts, cheeses, olives, etc, as well as a fish dish. Both were very tasty, as was the Lake Sonoma Zinfandel. The service was friendly and prompt.

Party of eight went on a Saturday night with the restaurant about 3/4 full. Service was inconsistent at first and later non-existent as we waited over an hour for our entree after our salads were served. Our server did not check on us nor tell us the status of our meals. We finally tracked him down after an hour with no explanation. We contacted one of the managers about fifteen minutes later and we were told she would contact the chef and our server. We never saw her again. The meals arrived and seven out of eight were cold. Ate them anyway. Someone from our party contacted the executive chef and told him the story. He brought the server and the managers in to find out what happened. Apparently, they lost our order. After receiving our bill (party of eight so the mandatory service charge), a manager came to our table and revised our bill to just charging us for the beverages (all non-alcoholic). If the executive chef had not stepped in and made this right, it would have just been icing on the cake.

I'm sorry the other fellow had a bad time but I speak from experience here & the Napa Valley Grille is one of our favorite restaurants. My wife & I go in at least once a week when we are in the valley (about four months a year). Some of our favorites are Thad’s Kobe burger fifteen bucks, it’s not on the dinner menu but if you ask they gladly make it for you. Katie’s lavender lemon-aid with hanger-one vodka, eight & a half dollars I think. Oh yea & the profiteroles are always great, under seven dollars. Thad said he can’t take those off of the menu or Katie will hurt him! At lunch they have great little combination plates with names like “Yountville” & “Calistoga”. It goes without saying that the service here is great, unpretentious, quick & friendly. We are on a first name basis with most of the staff. My wife & I have the ability to eat at any of the restaurants in the valley but again & again we choose the Napa Valley Grille. When we are traveling during the year we always use Napa as a bar when comparing restaurants, sadly we rarely find ones that beat our favorites like the Napa Valley Grille!

Horrible!

My wife & I are world travlers and have eaten at some of the finest restaurants in the world and The Napa Valley Grille was NOT one of them. We had dinner there on 2/24/06 and for a Friday eveining, the place was only about 1/3 full. The waiter...with several earings in his ears..rushed us..as though one was at a Fridays or Bennigans....The food was horrible..Abolutely NO TASTE...The meal tasted like HOPITAL FOOD. No spices at all. We had a mixed green salad, lamb shank....which both needed something to give them flavor....Also...note....The Napa Valley Grille charges....French Laundry prices...absolutely a rip off! Sorry that we went there...try somewhere else in the valley to eat..other than this place!
