“Modern, spacious, and eco-friendly - but not really cozy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2009

We were a little bit disappointed when we first entered our room at the Bardessono. The rooms are very modern and spacious but at the same time also somewhat stark and austere. The bed room and entrance area are entirely covered in concrete tiles, and the furnishing of the room is sparse and angular. In line with the Bardessono's commitment to the environment, the lighting inside the room is mainly fluorescent and LED, which produces a rather cold ambiance. The fire place is one of these modern gas fire places that consist of a single row of gas jets surrounded by some decorative glass pearls (the whole thing is behind a glass screen, so it doesn't even produce any significant heat).

The bath room is very spacious with shower, jacuzzi, and two separate sinks/vanities. Both the shower and the jacuzzi have large floor-to-ceiling windows that provide you an unobstructed view to the outside. Unfortunately, there are two minor flaws with this design. First of all, there is not really much to see other than your private little garden area that is surrounded by a wooden fence. Second, the unobstructed view may work in both directions if your room is located near the roof-top patio: people on the patio can watch you taking your shower, and you better remember to let the blinds down, unless this kind of experience somehow turns you on.

The hotel is in a very quiet area of Yountville (which, by itself, seems to be a very quiet place to begin with). However, we had some issues with noise sources in our own room. Instead of a mini bar, the rooms at the Bardessono are equipped with dual-temperature wine coolers that you can use to store the loot that you purchased at the local wineries in Napa Valley. The wine cooler is a handy feature for wine aficionados, but on the down-side it is the single most annoying noise-maker in the room. The wine cooler is integrated into the room furniture, and a small whining high-speed fan takes care of removing the excess heat. The fan is about as loud as a cheap desktop PC. Unplugging the cooler and the fan was about the first thing that I did after entering the room, but that might not be an option for those people who actually need to store some wine.
The flat screen TV is equipped with some sort of add-on surround sound unit which makes some low-frequency humming noise even when the TV is off. This was not as bad as the wine cooler but bad enough to prevent us from falling asleep, so we unplugged the TV as well.
Finally, speaking of annoying little noises, the fire place will make loud clanking sounds for about half an hour after you switch it off. Keep that in mind when you are planning to go to bed.

The service at the Bardessono was pretty good without any major problems. The hotel offers free valet parking but unfortunately no self parking (essentially, you pay tips instead of parking fees).

In the end, as always, whether or not you choose to stay at the Bardessono is a matter of personal preferences. If you enjoy an ascetic lifestyle and need a lot of space in your room to stretch out your yoga mat, then the Bardessono is a perfect choice. The same is true if you are environmentally conscious and prefer a hotel that shares those same ideas. However, if you want a cozy place with a warm atmosphere then there are probably other hotels in Napa Valley that would be better suited.

We had been anticipating the opening of this fabulous green hotel since I first read about it from staying at a sister hotel over a year ago--and we were not disappointed. Roger, the general manager, Paul the executive chef of the restaurant and staff were very professional, warm and friendly. Even with the rainy weather, the property was beautiful and fun. The style of the rooms is clean and modern with every possible new technology to make your stay easy--buttons available for the auto shutters, auto fireplace, steam shower, etc. We did a massage in our rooms which all have special accomodations for in-room massages and was above our expectations. Having it in-room allows you to continue to relax on the massage table as they leave quietly out the door when they are finished. The restaurant was fabulous and Paul the chef brilliant. They designed a 7 course custom wine/food tasting menu for a 14 person birthday celebration and every single inventive dish was delicious. The location is so perfect-no need to rent a car for eating as many great restaurants in walking distance including the hotel itself.

My husband took me here for my Birthday and I was so excited since it looked so unique. Service was horrible. We walked in and they have what is called an unconventional check in...Ok that is fine except there is nobody around. The Valet which were very nice tell you to go have a seat in the lounge. There was a lady at the front computer checking in a couple and she seriously looked at me 5 times in a crazy way without even saying Hello. She then took the couple to there rooms as I sat there with my husband not even being addressed...I got up and asked the concierge who was sitting there doing absolutely nothing if she could help us?? She said No she did not know what to do...Finally, she goes and gets another lady who proceeds to help us. I explained to her what had happened and she was apologetic but that was it...We then had the concierge make us reservation at our favorite restaurant in Yountville Bistro Jeanty. We arrive and come to find out we had NO reservation...This place needs some HELP!!! The rooms are spacious and modern but nothing special...for 500.00 no view or anything...You can actually see into other people's windows..I commend them for being environmentally friendly however at this price the service is well below par. I will never stay here again.

I'll add to the well-deserved kudos for this new property. We travelled with our 11 year-old in one of the 2 queen-bedded rooms. The second bed was separated from the main bedroom-living room by a full wall that goes about half-way down the bed, offering a measure of enjoyable privacy. It also had a flat-screen of its own, and night tables, both of which she used.

The technology in the rooms is impressive, whether the geothermal-based HVAC, 2 stage toilets, or self-closing and opening shades to keep the heat out when your not around. While many like to "push" green initiatives for the sake of being different, this hotel showed just how well energy-saving can blend into the background and only be noticed if you look or ask. Grounds are equally impressive, whether walking the herb garden (we asked the chef who was picking herbs about the evenings menu) or admiring the numerous water sculptures, plantings and just the architecture itself.

The staff was incredible. Very smooth and polished for such a new place, and not overly formal nor were they casual to the point of "trying to be hip". Location in Yountville is ideal, and we across the street to Bouchon bakery every morning, and had other enjoyable dinners at Ad Hoc and Hurleys, also within walking distance. Very worthwhile property, and far better in my opinion than many more expensive properties (ie Auberge, Calistoga Ranch)

My boyfriend and I wanted to get away from the city for a few days and Bardessono was just what we needed.

Beautiful location - Most of the hotels in the Napa Valley are close to Hwy 29 but the Bardessono is located on a quiet street in Yountville in walking distance to anywhere in town and only a 10 minute drive to Napa or St. Helena.
Great food - The breakfast was delicious and the croissants were to die for. We did not try room service but the dinner at the restaurant was amazing. Local food cooked to perfection. Our server was very friendly and had great suggestions for activities to do the next day.
Quality of rooms - The room was luxurious and contemporary, large bathroom, beautiful private courtyard with outdoor shower, comfortable bed and everything was very clean. The grounds were beautifully landscaped with amazing mature plants for such a new property.
This hotel only has about 60 rooms, so there are not a lot of people roaming around - and no parking in front of the rooms - perfect if you want to get away and have a relaxing stay.
Bike Rental - We took advantage of the hotels complimentary bike rental that is included in the room rate and explored some wineries around Yountville.
Spa -We did not use the spa services – spa services were available right in your own room or at the spa (which was not open at the time we stayed). The pool is on the rooftop and has beautiful views over the Napa hills.
Wonderful staff - we were amazed with the staff since the hotel just recently opened its doors - everyone was so friendly and seemed really genuine. They were also very helpful with whatever we needed and definitely helped to bring our stay to another level. It seems like their focus is making your stay a pleasant one.

CONS: none from us....we will be back!
