There is something about Wilbur. And I am biased because my husband and I chose this place for our wedding weekend.
I have read the other reviews and agree with some and vehemently disagree with others. I will share what we wrote to our guests, because the key to appreciating Wilbur is to know what it is all about.
our letter to our guests:
we chose wilbur hot springs in order to have the time and opportunities to relax and enjoy each other’s company. wilbur’s historic hotel and resort, that was established in 1865 is one of kind. and with such distinction, also come a few quirks that we wish to make very clear to you...
location - wilbur is remote. it is located 5 miles down a dirt road, and over 29 miles from the nearest “real” town. you need to bring everything that you need with you. there is no running to the corner store for anything.
electricity - wilbur runs exclusively on SOLAR power. there are NO electrical outlets for personal use. so please leave your hair-dryers and irons at home. there is no cell phone reception at wilbur - there is a pay phone available for use.
accommodations - yes, the hotel is old. this is part of the charm. some rooms are much better than others, but they are all simple. rooms upstairs are the nicest. this is communal living - imagine you are in someone's home. and yes, the room at the back with it's own kitchen is difficult, because it is over the communal kitchen and you smell and hear everything. it is not my first choice.
bathrooms - rooms DO NOT have private baths. each floor is equipped with private bathroom stalls and communal vanities. private showers are located outside by the pools...they are private, clean and nicely designed.
food - the communal kitchen is wonderful. bring everything that you need for your time there - cooking utensils and stuff are provided. refrigeration is available but not great because it is solar powered.
drink - please bring your favorite bottle(s) of wine, beer or other libation. a glass of wine on the porch or in the library is quite a treat.
waters - the waters at wilbur are like nothing else. you just have to experience them for yourself
