Greeted by a dozen or so free roaming goats immediately set the feel and pace of Howard Creek's relaxed atmosphere. The ample grounds and nearby beach offered many opportunities for great vistas. Sally's breakfasts are diverse and plentiful enough to please any palate and her table settings are a feast for the eyes. Our four days here without TV or radio afforded us an opportunity to improve our cribbage, gin rummy and other indoor activity performances. Truly unique experience!

“Quixotic Romanticism”

Howard Creek Ranch

Seldom in this world today does one find a location which ingrains itself upon ones very soul. Where one can remove oneself from the chaotic modern world and return to a simpler time of peace and tranquility.
The innkeepers, Sally and Sunny Grigg, have, over their 30+ years of stewardship, transformed the (c.1871) ranch through masterful craftsmanship and heartfelt restoration into realm of quixotic romanticism seldom found. Through the warm-heartedness of the innkeepers and staff; the made-from-the-heart breakfast presented gracefully elegant, one is enveloped with a sense of kith and kin.
Plato called beauty a privilege of nature; Carneades, a solitary kingdom; Aristotle, that it was better than all the letters of recommendation in the world; Homer, that it was a glorious gift of nature, and Ovid, that it was a favor bestowed by the gods. Beauty is Howard Creek Ranch Inn....Nita and Peter von Sintzenich

We read such great reviews but were very disappointed with our stay. We stayed in the "Boat" - a small cabin built around a boat. It had the potential to be charming but the carpet was really filthy as was the loveseat. The large skylight was covered with dirt and leaves. The bed sagged in the middle.

Overall, the room was quite rundown and this was our impression of the Inn overall. The cottage garden and the porch were quite charming and breakfast was very good. And the trail up the hillside was great with wonderful views of the ocean. On the other hand, there was a lot of junk around including along the trail up into the woods, the bridges were delapidated and there was a feeling of decay overall. I think the place has seen better days. I probably would not stay here again.

I'm sorry you were so disappointed. The BoatHouse is one of our most rustic cabins and yes, we are replacing the carpet. We allow dogs in this cabin and the carpet gets a lot of wear and tear, especially so close to the creek. This place has "not seen better days". I need to get help to put pictures of what it was like when we first came here. Most people would not have even tried to save the ranch or its buildings even though they were historic. We milled old growth redwood lumber ourselves. We dismantled other old buildings to retrieve boards, hardware, etc original to the era. We WILL finish all of our projects and our place will be the showplace we intend it to be. And you should know that in the autumn, leaves fall every day on the Boat skylight. We try to clean it daily but we do not always succeed. Sorry. We do try to let people know that we are a rustic, rural farm, not for everyone, but Heaven for those who can see it for what it is. Thank you for the opportunity to vent. We love it here and love our guests. Sincerely, Sally, Owner

We stayed here for 3 nights in the main house and absolutely loved it. It is very comfortable but quirky without a doubt, making it a great start to conversations over the breakfast table. The house and our room were full of beautiful lampshades, antique furniture and lovingly crafted hardwood by Sonny. To be able to lie in bed at night and see shooting stars through the skylights was incredible and from the upstairs porch of our room I have never watched so many humming birds at such close quarters. Sally and her staff produced the most amazing breakfasts we tasted on the whole of our visit to the US. The only minor downside was the drive to Fort Bragg for restaurants in the evening as we were not in the carriage barn and so had no kitchen facilities but the Mendo Bistro was excellent. We would definitely visit this place again.

What a wonderful place to stay!!! Sally and Sonny are great hosts but give you plenty of privacy... You almost feel like the whole place is yours! If you are looking for relaxation and beauty then this is the spot! It is located next to a quiet beach and is surrounded by lush woods. Outstanding!!! And let me not forget the breakfasts!!! Yum-o!
