“The ruination of a Hollywood classic”

We stayed for a 3 night stopover arriving on the night of the Vanity Fair Golden Globes party. We'd not been told beforehand that the entire hotel (aside from back corridors and our room) would be off limits to us as another reviewer has complained.

As a frequent visitor to LA on business I have stayed at some great hotels in the area. I'd been looking foward to my stay at this great icon of the golden age of Hollywood. I was hugely disappointed. It may be fresh from a makeover but I was appalled and felt cheated by the level or rather lack of service and cheapness of the amenities.

In an age when most people have bath sheets in their homes you don't expect thin bath towels in what's supposed to be a top hotel.

Upon arrival we were told rather haughtily that we wouldn't be able to access any public spaces in the hotel. When we asked what the party was for we were treated as though we had no right to ask. Happy to take our money though.

Our room was tiny. Made smaller by the fact that the television console was broken with a door hanging off the hinge, hindering access to the bed. When we rang down to ask for a room change we were treated as though this was an unreasonable request. In the end an engineer bolted the door back on. Even he seemed to think it was okay to have a door hanging off.

The tv was positioned in such a way that we couldn't see it from either the bed or seating area!

The hairdryer was the cheapest Sunbeam you can buy. You get better quality amenities at budget hotels.

The available tv channels were limited to around 6! The menu was unappetising and ridiculously limited.

But the tone of service was the most irritating aspect of our stay. It was self important, cold and frankly incongruous with a hotel of this stature.

I will surely never stay here again.

“Would Never Stay, Money Better Spent at Best Western Next Door!”

Sunset Tower Hotel

My bestfriends planned my 30th birthday party, and booked us a room, for 2 nights, at the Sunset Tower Hotel. We had a deluxe suite at $395.00 plus tax, per night. Our first night there was pretty bad, the mini-bar was stocked with expired juice and diet Coke. We ordered room service at 1:00 am and although they have only 4 things on their late night menu, the hamburgers, 2 mini ones, were supposed to come with brie, caramelized onions, and dijonaise, we got plain hambugers NO CHEESE, NO ONIONS, nothing like the description! And it took an hour and a half to deliver!! So, first night was pretty bad.

Our second night was MUCH worse! We had the unfortunate luck of staying there the night Vanity Fair held their pre Golden Globes party. We were NOT notified of this engagement prior to the time the hotel and Sunset stip was barracaded!!! It took my husband almost 1 hour to figure out how and where to park his car, since the valet was closed with police barracades! When we left the hotel, by foot, to eat across the street, we were questioned about who we were and where we were going and escourted out the back entrance. When we attempted to return to our hotel we could NOT use the front entrance and had to walk about a half a mile out of the way, to come in the back, where we were questioned again, and had to show a room key to get in. Complaints to Oshwag, the Front Desk Manager, Jennifer the night shift manager, and Patrick, the general manager, all went badly. They did not care about all the trouble, or the $1000 we spent to be treated like a homeless person trying to stay at their hotel. They also offered us a discounted rate on a future stay, and, as another person said, I WOULD NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN! Also, I love a soft bed, but the beds were WAY too soft. We also had a lovely comforter on our bed the first night, but the second night they have been replaced with a batting like material sandwiched between 2 sheets! Stay the the La Meridan, or the Best Western right NEXT door, but if you want wonderful customer service and to be treated like a guest who paid $400 a NIGHT, you won't get that here! We plan to sue...I will update.

Stayed in a corner suite on the 11th floor- great location, beautiful room, wonderful service. We loved our room- gorgeous views of LA from all the windows. The hotel has been restored beautifully. Everyone was friendly and helpful and it was perfectly located on Sunset between the Mondrian and the Marmont. I will stay there again on my next trip to LA.

“Restaurant is the main attraction”

We stayed on the 14th floor in one of the renovated standard rooms. Room was very comfortable, plasma screen TV, minibar, tasteful decor, great bed and linens. Overnight parking is $25, bill came to about $300 for the night. Pleasant but nothing remarkable. Service is a bit off, perhaps they will iron out the kinks in the future since they just opened recently. When we checked in a staff member stood there behind the desk staring at the floor and wiping his nose with a tissue the whole time. Not a sophisticated first impression. The staff in general is a bit more casual and "collegiate" then expected at this level of hotel. And a little slow - it took over 20 minutes to have ice brought to the room. The Tower Bar on the first floor is excellent however and really the main reason to visit. Excellent food, great atmosphere and the service was impeccable. Perhaps the restaurant staff can eventually bring the front desk up to speed.

“Awful, awful experience”

Sunset Tower Hotel

I booked a weekend here for a romantic getaway with my boyfriend and have never had such a terrible hotel experience. First they put us in a tiny business room after I had booked, and had confirmed, a junior suite. When I went to talk to them about it immediately after checking in they really couldn't care less and just said the hotel was full so there was nothing they could do about it. They did offer to give us a discount though and said they'd call me that evening. They never called and the next morning when I asked about it they said that the discount was to only charge me the small business room rate for the small business room we stayed in instead of charging me for the junior suite I had reserved and never stayed in! Unbelievable. They also said they might be able to offer us a better rate the next time we stay there - I can't believe they'd assume we'd ever stay there again. I can understand an honest mistake but I found the service extremely rude. To add insult to injury the valet parking stuck a sticker on my boyfriend's car window that wouldn't come off. Overall a horrible experience.
