“Hidden Sanctuary on Sunset!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2010

Where do I start... The beautiful grounds are incredibly lush and the villas are situated discreetly throughout. At night, candles light the walkway along the koi pond and gardens which make you feel like your staying on the grounds of a private estate. The villa was well furnished, clean, and had a beautiful patio with very nice patio dining table. Oh and the bed... hopefully you don't have to get up early because it is so comfortable. The pool was just a a few steps away and we basically had it all to ourselves with the exception of the pool staff who were friendly and provided great service. I had a massage in one of the spa suites which was lovely. The room service was fast and delicious, as was the beautiful Restaurant. If you are staying in WeHo and want laid back, truly unique, and serene hotel with excellent service, Sunset Marquis is the place.

We loved absolutely everything about Sunset Marquis! From the staff to the amenities and rooms. Worth every cent.
Our third trip to LA from Australia, but our first time at Sunset Marquis. Definately where we will be staying in LA from now on.
Highly recommend - you won't be disappointed.

If you want beautiful architecture and marble halls, this hotel is not for you. However if you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff, a great but quiet location and something very different you will love it. I stayed in a junior villa for five nights - the room had everything I needed and a patio leading out to the pool. There was an interesting mix of fellow guests...very few tourists, either people staying while they worked or independent types who find 'grand' hotels souless. There is sense of privacy about the hotel which is why it attracts celebrities - there were several staying at the time. The restaurant serves good food, the level of service throughout was excellent. I would recommend the various villa types as the best accomodation. You are a very short walk from Sunset Boulevard and the music venues and bars.Bar 1200 within the hotel is a hotspot and you are already there! I will definitely return.

We have stayed at the Sunset Marquis 4 or 5 times over the last few years and every time we return it is better than the last. The villa accommodations are spectacular, the service is impeccable and the location is in perfect proximity to anything going on in the Los Angeles area. The restaurant has become a destination location on its own due to its wonderful menu and chef's sensibilities. Walking back through the hotel into the villa gardens you feel as if you have been transported back to old time Hollywood glamour but with a distinct rock and roll edge. It is wonderful to know that after a long day of travel you won;t be disappointed once you get to your hotel. You are welcomed and treated as if you are part of the Hollywood insiders. If all of this isn't enough to relax you after a hectic day, make sure to visit the spa, where you will be pampered, soothed and rejuvenated, ready to make the most of your time in California.

Five star prices for five star service in a three star property. The main building is so poorly constructed that you hear just about everything happening above, around and outside your room, day and night. This includes, walking, toilet flushing, shower running, door closing, conversations, you name it.

The fixtures and furnishings seem to not have not been updated in over 10 years given the old TV sets (first hotel I've stayed in in a long time without flat screen TV's), worn furniture, and stained carpets. The air-conditioning is so antiquated that the only way to keep the fan going continuously was to turn the temperature to the minimum. The beds are comfy however.

The lighting in the incredibly small bathroom was so bad (low) that it was impossible to distinguish between the shampoo and conditioner bottles (and I don't yet need reading glasses). The bathroom fan, which turns on automatically with the lights, is loud beyond comprehension and doesn't expel air.

Internet access costs $12 per day.

This hotel is all hype and, for the money, one can find much better accommodations in the area.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor. I apologize our accommodations didn't meet your expectations. As mentioned in previous responses to guest reviews, we are taking steps to refresh our suites in the main building. Over the next several months we will be addressing many of your concerns, not the least of which is upgrading to flat screen televisions.

Within the past 18 - 24 months, the Sunset Marquis has undergone a massive, $35 million dollar expansion to provide a new, full-service restaurant and state of the art Spa, as well as 52 villas sprawling out over almost 5 acres. We've also recently opened new event space and our own on-site photography studio. The next step in this process is the refresh of the main building.

While quality of product plays a large part in the star rating of any property, equal credit must go to the level of service provided as well. And at the Sunset Marquis we pride ourselves on providing the best, and readily respond to any guest concerns once they are brought to our attention. Should anyone be less than satisfied with their accommodations we only ask that you let us know so we may address it accordingly.

Thank you.

This hotel looks great on the outside--the pool area is nice, the courtyard restaurant and bar are lush and inviting and the property sits discreetly behind greenery on a quiet West Hollywood side street-- but the rooms are somewhere far short of great and need to be reworked.

For a fairly hefty price, you get what is essentially a Holiday Inn quality room with "designer" furnishings. The furniture feels like tired IKEA, the bathroom has a single vanity and tub/shower combo that felt quite cramped and had bad water pressure. The whole room felt a little unclean, eventhough housekeeping did its job. This building was clearly one of those California-style mid-grade apartment buildings that they converted into a hotel, and it shows in the infrastructure, including the low ceiling heights, bad water pressure and cramped bathrooms.

On the plus side, the staff was fantastic--the concierge was especially capable and efficient. The location is great as well. Overnight parking is a ripoff at 30 dollars a night, but is, unfortunately, to be expected. There is no gym on site, but they hand out free passes to a nearby Equinox.

Like many things in LA, this property is about form over substance.

Good day and thank you for the review. While I would take issue re your comparison of our rooms to a Holiday Inn, I will submit to you that some of our suites require a refresh. Indeed, we are currently preparing for this and will start renovations within the next few weeks. However, built in 1963 according to guidelines and zoning regulations at the time, the Sunset Marquis has always been a hotel and is not a converted apartment building. While it started as just the main building featuring 100 suites, we have expanded our overall footprint to include 52 Villas now as well, situated on almost 5 acres of land.

Different people have different tastes, and while we never like to receive comments of a negative nature about the hotel, we respect the fact that this forum provides a unique opportunity for guests to share their sentiments about our overall service and quality, and this provides viewers the opportunity to consider all input from all guests when determining where they'd like to stay during their visit to West Hollywood.

I do wish to acknowledge your compliments regarding our concierge and other staff, however, and thank you for your balanced review of the Sunset Marquis Hotel.
