I have to admit, my friend and I were ready to pack our bags and leave the hotel the first night. The rooms were rather worn looking and not what we expected for the price we paid. But the real problem was the noise. When we checked in, the hotel placed us in a room that shared a wall with their bar. Arriving from the East Coast and having been up since 4:00am EST, we tried to go to sleep rather early -around 10:00-ish. But the noise in the room was unbelievable! The music was pounding and we could literally hear the people having conversations (yelling over the music) on the other side of the wall. This must be a regular problem as there were a set of ear plugs in the amenities basket on the desk...but if you used them, you would be charged $2.00! And, there was only one set.
We finally decided we had enough and went to speak with the staff at the front desk about having our room changed. IF they didn't agree to move us, we were going to leave (although we did not tell them that.) This is where the hotel get's high marks in my opinion. The staff was wonderful and very nice. They apologized and explained that at this time of the night, they had no other room available to put us in, but we would be moved the next day. So we decided to just deal with it for one night-even though we were exhausted. They gave us free ear plugs, which helped enough so that we could fall asleep. But to give you an idea of just how loud it was, you could still hear the music with the earplugs in. They did move us as promised the next day to a room overlooking the pool and it was much better. People did hang out at the pool at night and there was some noise...but we just kept the AC on and that seemed to mask the noise a little bit.
Another plus of this hotel was the location! It was excellent. Right in the center of all the action on the Sunset Strip. We could easily get everywhere from our hotel and never had to travel the freeways. We were able to visit Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Universal, Burbank, Santa Monica and Venice Beach and everything was so close and easy to find from our hotel. Santa Monica and Venice were the longest drives, about 30 minutes, but again, we didn't take any highways which would have cut our time considerably.
I probably wouldn't stay in this hotel again. Next time I visit I'll probably try to the Sunset Plaza which was a few doors down from the Grafton. But if you don't care about a fancy room, can deal with a little noise and want a great location-you may like this hotel.
