My fiancé and I were due to stay here for a week, it seemed like a great deal as they offered a discounted rate if you stayed 7 days or more. When we checked in the receptionist/caretaker seemed very nice though I expected we had been charge too much for our stay, but I remained quiet on the suspicion that I may have made the mistake and wanted to check their website to confirm it.
We arrived on a Wednesday and done the usual touristy things, exploring West Hollywood and such, so no chance of getting to a computer to check.
Thursday we headed to San Diego Zoo (Very nice BTW) and were away all day, no chance again.
Friday we had appointments to get tattoos, and were away all day, again no chance.
Saturday was a day out to Six Flags (Make sure you’ve a strong stomach for this one), another day gone. Dang!
Sunday we are out shopping and stumble into a Sony shop, they have a computer set up on the web, so I sneakily check the motel’s website and find that my suspicions were correct, we had been overcharge, so I headed back to confront the caretaker.
I headed to the small office to inform the caretaker that I thought we’d been overcharged. She told me that wasn’t true, and tried to deflect me by saying that 1. She was hungry (then proceeded to start eating while I was talking), then 2. She was too busy. When I brought to her attention that the website stated that if you stayed over 7 days there was a discount see told me that there was no weekly deal at that time. I informed her that we had booked for the weekly deal see told me we hadn’t and showed me our booking which showed no mention of any discount, then she tried to dismiss me. I took control of her mouse and went to the BOOKING screen, where I clicked every drop down box and there was no option to add the words “Weekly rate” to a booking, I asked her how I was supposed to book for a weekly rate if there was no option for it. So she changed her story, say that I was supposed to ask for it when I checked in, as she may not have had any rooms for the weekly rate (this part made no sense to me, as we had already booked AND confirmed that she was keeping a room for us). I used her computer again to go to the RATES page of the site where it made no mention whatsoever of having to state that you wanted the weekly rate. So I pressed my point again, and obviously pushed to hard as she exploded. She started screaming at me despite me repeatedly asking her not to shout as I was standing right next to her. Then finally she agreed to refund me when we checked out, great I thought, except she wanted us out right then. We still had three days left, and obviously nowhere else to go. I explained that we weren’t leaving for another three days, to which she threatened me with Police removal. As it was past the 11am check out time she kindly said she wouldn’t charge us for that day, hearty I thought, and we would get three days refund. My fiancé luckily found us somewhere else to stay. When I headed to the office for our refund I was met with more resistance. She told me that she was deducting 20% from our refund as “The credit card company charges us this” I told her in no uncertain terms that this was ridiculous and we argued (yet again) till she told me it was either that or she would only give us two days refund, I had to admit defeat and take the reduction as it was the lesser of two evils.
This was the worst experience I’ve ever had in the States and although it didn’t ruin our holiday it certainly put a dampener on it.
I would seriously advise people to either stay well clear or know what the hell you’re getting in to, the caretaker is an absolute lunatic.
