We spent several nights at a really nice hotel in Monterey but the lack of a pool and a doubling of the rate on New Year's Eve made us look for an alternative. I wasn't sure what to expect from this property, Watsonville isn't excatly a tourtist mecca and from my research of the hotel I was expecting a simple motel. We chose it primarily for the great rate (we paid just over a $100.00 for a suite) and the fact that that the outdoor pool is heated year round.
My first reaction to the hotel was ambivalent, it looked clean and decent enough but it's definitely a motor court motel, some people referrred to a "garden, resort feel" to this property but we didn't get that impression, at least not at first. Then we got to our room...
Our suite was fantastic! We had two large bedrooms, one with a king sized bed and one with a queen. The smaller bedroom had a half bath while the larger had a full. Though there was no living room each room had tv's and was big enough for chairs and desks etc. The furnishings and tv's were all new and very comfortable and our kids loved having their own room (as did we!). As others have mentioned the Mexican painted sinks are a really nice touch.
Travelling in December we were fortunate to have weather in the upper 60's to lower 70's which I understand is unseaonably warm for the area. We were overjoyed to find a property with an outdoor pool that wasn't shut down and it was great! Though not huge it was a decent size and was indeed heated and very comfortable. There was also a hot tub so it wasn't very hot...While using the pool I began to realize what people were talking about with the garden feel as there were nice roses and other flowers planted around it, it was definitely a little nicer than the standar pool in the middle of a parking lot that you normally find at motels.
We found breakfast to be a little nicer than usual for this type of property with lots of choices.
Though Watsonville isn't not glamorous and has a working class vibe to it, it felt very safe and is actually quite charming. We walked to a really good Mexican restaurant just a couple of blocks away (Jalisco's?) and enjoyed walking around the neighberhood at night looking at the amazing Christmas light displays. I just note that Watsonville is a good half hour drive from either Santa Cruz or Monterey, in theory this makes it a good jumping off point for either city but I would prefer to be closer to the action for an extended stay.
