“Standard Holiday Inn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2008

We recently spent 3 nights at the Holiday Inn in Visalia while we visited Sequoia National Park. This property is nothing exceptional, but is adequate. Most of the staff (front desk and restaurant) are not very attentive and give the impression that they would enjoy their jobs a lot more if it weren’t for the customers. The lobby and public areas were well done, but the rooms were typical Holiday Inn – nothing special, a little dated, but functional. They did have free wireless internet that worked well.

The hotel is on the west side of Visalia right off of CA 198. There isn’t much in the area except for a nice park and golf course across the street. We were given an end room that got the benefit of the highway and pool noise, but we learned to put up with it. If you can get a room that faces the park across the street it might be quieter. We mostly ate at the on-site restaurant which was reasonably priced, food was adequate and service was poor; pretty typical for a Holiday Inn restaurant.

There is quite a bit to do in the area for a few days. There is a shuttle that picks you up at the Holiday Inn and for $15 (round trip) will take you to the Giant Forest Museum in Sequoia (about 2 hours) and then you can hike or take the free park shuttle. This is very convenient if you don’t want to drive to or in the park. Also there is a nice mall in Visalia just south of CA 198 on CA 63. There is also an outlet mall at Tulare about 10 miles away, so you can spend a day shopping if you want.

The Visalia Holiday Inn is a convenient place to stay and is priced about right, but don’t expect much more than a place to call home base and you won’t be disappointed.

Who would have thought you can find such a nice hotel in Visalia! We stayed here to go to Sequoia National Park and it was great. The lobby was like a 4 star hotel and the rooms were very nicely appointed and comfortable. They provided a crib with all the bedding for our 7 month old and he slept like a rock.

The only knocks on the hotel were that the hallways were very low, so if you are 7 ft tall you would probably have to duck. I'm thinking this is because they had to install sprinklers after the place was built. The indoor and outdoor pools look a bit dated.

We had breakfast downstairs with a coupon we received because we are in the Priority Club. Join before booking to get these benefits. Good breakfast.

The hotel is 1 hour away from Sequoia National Park so it is a drive, but at least there are good places to eat in Visalia instead of crappy Park food.

We highly recommended this place if you are staying in Visalia and we will probably go back when we visit the park again.

We find this to be one of the best places to stay along Hwy 99. We have stayed here at least a dozen times in the past 3-4 years. Very nice rooms, lobby and amenities. Room service is not bad either. Be sure to join Priority Club for the free goodies and drink at the bar.

If you happen to stay on a Friday night there are car races within a 3 minute walk. Great fun!

Stayed here while visiting the National Parks. The rooms are good sized and very clean. The only problem we had, was the air conditioning in our room. We visited Visalia, during the 100 degree plus days of July. Our room stayed at a constant 75-80 degrees even though I had turned the thermostat down much below. To the credit of the front desk, however, they did have maintenece people check out the problem. It was never taken care of however.
The pools are both good sized and very nice. We ate at the restaurant on the property one night. It seems others had been waiting for their dinners, we didn't experience that. They have a wonderful soup and salad bar that should keep you happy until your dinner comes. I did have one complaint however, I asked for ice water, and the waiter would only fill my glass half full each time he came. Since our room was warm, I was drinking alot of water, he seemed irritated that I would want so many refills of water. Other than that, the food and service was ok. We would stay there again, just making sure the air conditioning worked before we settled into our room.

We thought it would be a convenient place to stop to see Sequoia. In reality, it's 40 minutes to the park and another 40 minutes to the trees. The rooms was nice, but the air conditioning barely worked. We needed the coin laundry, but they were out of laundry soap. The Diet Pepsi machine was also empty on all floors. The dinner service in the restaurant was atrocious. We ordered two sandwiches and two kid's pizzas and it took almost an hour. We weren't the only ones complaining. The breakfast staff was much better, but it was also a buffet. I would try the Holiday Inn Express in Three Rivers if I had it to do again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2006

We stayed two nights in early April for a car club event, booking a king non-smoking room. Upon arrival, we were impressed with the size of the hotel, impressive lobby, indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant, bar and conference facilities. There's even a nice park across the street. We were a little less impressed with the slow check-in, though.

The room was not as nicely appointed as the lobby would lead you to believe, but we rested well and had a surprisingly quiet stay despite being located on the ground floor near the outdoor pool. We think it would be much noisier in that room in the summer months when the pool is used, however.

With my Priority Club card, we got the "free" breakfast, which was actually pretty good. We ate at the hotel (banquet style) and were pleased with the food and service.

Staff weren't very helpful in giving restaurant or local shopping advice, except to say, "Go to old town. There are lots of restaurants there." FYI... most modern shopping can be found south of the highway at the Mooney exit. There's also a neat old drive-in (Mearle's) on Mooney that serves yummy sundaes and other typical greasy lunch or dinner treats.
