Hubby and I needed a change of scenery and Groupon had a two-night deal for the Ben Maddox B&B, only about 2 hours from our home. We've stayed in several B&B's in Texas, New York and California and have had good experiences. We reserved the Ben Maddox Room, the only one with a king-size bed and arrived in the late afternoon on a Thursday. Lucy greeted us with a bottle of wine and made us feel at home. Our room was being cleaned, so we chatted for a bit. Lucy has great family stories and is interested in yours, as well. Ben Maddox is close to great downtown restaurants, so we walked to dinner. Afterward we relaxed in our room and drank the wine, which was very good. I thought the bed looked lumpy, but, apparently it was a feather bed, and we slept very well. We each bathed in the lovely deep tub, but discovered the bathroom floor to be very dirty. It was hard to tell until I used a towel to dry up some dripped water. I'm not a perfectionist, but it needed cleaning! Also, there were no facial tissues or other toiletries. One last negative - the room wasn't very well lit or have an alarm clock. We did enjoy the two gliding rockers, though. Lucy's breakfast are fantastic and she was very helpful, making a dinner reservation for us, offering to buy a razor and loaning us walking sticks. So, I'm really torn on how to rate or whether to recommend our experience. Let's just say that most of my friends would be turned off by the lack of cleanliness.

Our family gathered at the Ben Maddox house for a two night stay for some "Family Time".. We came from both ends of California and were welcomed by Lucy and her staff upon our arrival with smiles and open arms. We immediately felt at home - the longer we stayed, the less we wanted to leave! Our breakfasts on Sat and Sun mornings were home cooking at its finest - all tastefully served with china and fresh linens. Lingering at the table seemed only right - we were all family! Lucy's kindness and hospitality was evident in everything we experienced! She graciously cooked dinner for all 13 of us Saturday night without batting an eye! We will return and highly recommend this "home" to everyone! Thank you Lucy!

I stayed here with friends on a road trip around California. For anyone travelling between San Fransisco and Las Vegas, you won't find a better half way stop-off. Visalia is a typical and authentic central Californian town. By day we explored the beautiful countryside and by night we found a karaoke bar to entertain us. Lucy the owner was like a mother to us and her home-cooking was delicious. She is a mine of information about the local history and has many an interesting story to tell. The house itself is quaint and welcoming and the pool was lovely, with one of the rooms opening out onto the poolside.

I came here with a group of friends (we're in our twenties) en route to Vegas, but this B&B stole the show. It split up the road trip between San Fran and Vegas perfectly and the hospitality and charm of the place blew us away.
The town was like nowhere else we had been in the US. If you have only been to the big cities, plan a trip to Visalia, check out the bars and the friendly locals and you'll have experienced something you can only get in California.
The history of the Ben Maddox house itself is fascinating and added a lot to the experience. Great value. Would definitely recommend it to a friend or group of friends!

We stayed in the Anna Mills cottage. We arrived hungry and Lucy directed us to many excellent restaurants within walking distance. After dinner the kids swam in the garden pool and we relaxed with wine, cheese and cherries provided by the inn. We met some really interesting people from all over the country. We slept in very comfortable beds and woke up to the most amazing breakfast- so artfully presented we didnt want to ruin it by eating it! The blueberry french toast was out of this world. The innkeeper (Lucy) is incredibly friendly and made the visit awesome.

This has to be one of the best B&B's I have stayed in. I am an Author and travel all over and by far, this is the best I've stayed in. My family and I were treated like royalty. We wanted for nothing. The house was beautiful, peaceful, restful and we felt very welcome and at home there. This place is like stepping into a different place in time, with a small orchard and various hide aways , a fountain, sundial, shaded table, profusions of flowers. We were left with the feeling we still had more to discover. There is a stillness about the place which is like an enchantment. The owner was outstandingly gracious and attentive and our kids instantly fell in love with her. If we wanted something, she was there but never a bother or hovering over us so we couldn't enjoy it, and definitely a real person with no snobbery or any of that kind of foolishness about her. This is how B&B's should be, TOP NOTCH. We are definitely returning on a regular basis and sending more her way.
