“Warm & Comforting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

It was perfect, home away from home without the TV! Very cozy and warm, the rooms are clean and the bed very comfortable. The morning coffee and breakfast was just everything you would want to start your day right. So glad we discovered it and will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter.

We were looking for a relaxing get-away and this place fit the bill. The room was comfy, clean and quiet (and no TV, wonderful!). The proprietors of the hotel were gracious and friendly and accommodating. We loved sitting on the front porch with a glass of wine. The restaurant, Rocker Oysterfeller's, served delicious food and the staff was friendly and attentive. The location is perfect for exploring this wonderful part of Sonoma County and is close to wineries, beaches and farmland. We look forward to going back!

We stayed here because of the other reviews onTrip Advisor, but I must have missed a number of details. First, when we arrived at 4 PM, and the entire place was locked. Thankfully, the bartender heard us trying to get in and opened the door. There was no check-in and after waiting about five minutes, we were given a key. Then, we couldn't get the door open. It was one of those, "ram into the door hard with your shoulder to get it open - it's a little sticky" kind of doors.

The shower was very small, there was no TV and no WiFi, so we ended up using one of our phones as a " hotspot" and made do. The rooms are also directly above the bar and restaurant, so if you're looking for a quiet night's rest, not here. Luckily, we were there on a weekday night, so things wrapped up by about 11:00 and we were able to finally drift off

On a positive note, their lavender body wash and citrus hand soaps supplied in the room were divine, as we're the sheets. So, for out of the way, removed from the hustle and bustle, it scores - for charming and refined, I'm afraid it doesn't.

We had high hopes for this place...me and the lady were getting away for a long weekend. We called weeks in advance to make the reservations for 2 nights...spoke to some guy on the phone and he assured me, we were all taken care of.

The day we get there, a very nice woman checked us in and said that we were down for 1 night. Clearly this was a mistake, when we asked for the guy we had booked with, she told us that he was not there. then she told us that the inn was booked for the rest of the weekend, so we'd have to head home after 1 night or find another inn.

The woman offered to help us find one, she called a place and handed us the phone, and that will be a review for a different time. annnnnd offered to get us some oysters and drinks on the house, if we had dinner there...as a to say sorry. Which we thought was nice. (if it actually happened). We show up that night and the woman who claimed she would "hook us up" had left for the weekend.

We definitely felt let down by the whole experience.

This place is definitely not worth the price. Cute, but not great.

Room Tip: Rooms away from above the bar.

The good things:
An extremely helpful and welcoming host.
For what we needed, a good location where there isn’t much else.
Excellent coffee.
A nice table in the room for doing computer work.

The less good things:
No breakfast is served during the week, although coffee is available in the hallway.
A cramped bathroom with impossible lighting and sink with no stopper.
Windows that can’t be left open because there are no screens and can’t easily be closed because the mechanism is broken.
An awkward, quirky room with ceiling fan and desk light that don’t work properly.

All in all, it’s hard to give the hotel more than a three. I think the only reason it rates higher than that with most people is because the owner is so nice. Aside from that, I’d have given it a two.

We were there on a Monday when the restaurant and bar are closed. Very quiet.

Small rm - no TV - the bartender tried to chg me twice for the rm. Not very friendly. Very odd entrance to the rm. Looked like just a big bar. No thanks not for $150.00. I wouldn't call that romantic at all.

Room Tip: Don't bother staying there.

We arrived to Valley Ford Hotel at about 6:30 in the evening, with just enough time to check-in, change our clothes, and hop back in the car to drive to dinner a few towns over.

It didn't take long, though, to change our plans. We entered through the hotel bar, Rocker Oysterfeller, which was humming with conversation and cocktails all the way around. The menu advertised a happy hour special until 7pm - $3 fish tacos. We checked in and went up to our room. The bed was dressed in impeccable white linens and the patchwork quilt added some cozy charm. On our way out the door, we couldn't help passing through the bar again and taking a quick scan of the menu. Cheese grits? Fresh oysters with Louisiana hot sauce and garlic butter? Duck and squab gumbo? And the kicker - a long list of cocktails, including a sazerac and a special honey concoction developed by Michelle, the bar tender. The half-hour drive to our dinner reservation no longer appeared so inviting. We cozied up to the bar for the night - a great decision.

We made a meal of small plates, including all of the dishes listed above. Everything was excellent - hearty enough to be called comfort food, but with enough unusual (and pleasant) twists to be memorable. We would have easily paid twice as much for the happy hour fish tacos! Some local folks befriended us, insisting that this was the only place to come for fresh oysters - they were right. We enjoyed great cocktails and closed off the evening with a bottle of beer. The wine list was worth exploring, even though we didn't.

We retired early and enjoyed a comfortable night's rest. In the morning, we jogged a three-mile loop on country roads near the hotel and returned for a continental breakfast that supplied coffee, tea, pecan tarts, hard-boiled eggs, and similar breakfast munchies. Our only regret was that we hadn't planned to stay longer.

Valley Ford Hotel may be a little out of the way for some, but it is well worth the effort. Our room was a great value, boasting the same price as run-of-the-mill accommodations near the airport, but with infinitely more charm and comfort. The staff were friendly, yet efficient, and we wanted for nothing during our (too brief) stay. We will surely plan a return visit soon.
